Did you know . . .

In 1971, the Chevelle SS was available for the first time since 1965, with a small block engine . . . the 350.

The SS package did not include a motor like it did from 1966 to 1970 (396/454). The package consisted of SS badges, domed hood with hood pins, 15x7 styled steel wheels with F60x15 RWL tires, PDB and special suspension. You had your choice of a 350, 400 or 454 engine which was extra. It was not available with the 307 engine.

The Sport Stripes were an option if the Cowl Induction wasn't ordered (they were included).

Looking at the above car, just from the exterior, you wouldn't know if it had the small block 350 or the big block 400 as there were no engine callout emblems on the front fenders (Beneath the SS badge) like there was for the 454.

A rare photo of a 1971 Chevelle SS with no Sport Stripes - It's a GM photo BTW

I am sure that not all 1971 Chevelle Super Sports came with Sport Stripes. But just search for photos - and see if you can find one without them.

Hi Lee,
Excuse me, but isn´t that a 1972 or is some kind of GM strange picture? Why did GM change the callout for the 396(402) to 400? It´s confusing with the 400 smallblock. Chris

Is that a 72 SS? I thought it was a 71.

Oops! I see the front grille is different than the 71 . . . My bad.

Baldwin Motion only sold 7 1969 Phase III 427 Camaros. This is a re-creation of #1 which was stolen 3 months after it was sold. These cars were VERY expensive - about $5900+

Motion was one of the few performance car dealers that did not use the COPO system in 1969 to get 427 Camaros. You ordered an L78 396/375hp SS then Motion pulled the engine and stuck in a factory crate L72 427.

1969 L78 SS 396 Chevelle Convertible with M22 4 Speed

Chevy built 2,286 SS 396 Chevelle Convertibles in 1969. This one is extremely rare because of the L78, the M22 and it's color - Monaco Orange - a 1969 Chevelle SS only color.
