Thirty years ago today, March 16, speed king and racing legend Mickey Thompson and his wife Trudy were gunned down in the driveway
of their Bradbury, California, home by two hooded assassins who fled the scene on bicycles and who have never been identified.
Nineteen years later a disgruntled former business partner was convicted of having orchestrated the murders.

A brilliant and innovative race car driver, designer, and promoter, Thompson held 485 national and international speed and
endurance records at the time of his passing. You may remember that in 1960 he was the first American to break the 400 mph
barrier in Challenger I, a land speed car he designed and built in his garage.

Option 1: Order G60x15 RWL tires only - came with body colored painted wheels and chrome lug nuts

Option 2: Order hubcaps and trim rings for 15" wheels - wheels painted Black - RPO: W12

Option 3: Order 15" Rallye Wheels - RPO: W21

The above three options apply to the Charger R/T and Charger Super Bee. Dodge did not offer wheel covers if you ordered the G60x15" RWL tires. Like the Magnum 500 "Road Wheels" wheel covers only came in 14".

Chrysler was in very bad financial shape by the 1971 model year. They were doing anything they could to save a buck and try to get more money from their customers. It was cheaper to include chrome lug nuts than it was to include hubcaps. And you couldn't order just hubcaps either.

Cool info, thank you! I just never saw this look on a 1971 model.

You would have to have Build Sheet to determine which of the 3 options the car was originally ordered with. I am sure that many cars have been upgraded to Rallye Wheels that didn't originally come with them.

The Red Charger R/T is owned by Tim Wellborn who is very fastidious about having his cars "Build Sheet Correct."
