2012 Ford Police Interceptor: The Crown Vic's Robocop Replacement

Quote:
Ford's Crown Victoria-based police interceptor will finally end production late next year. This is its replacement the 2012 Ford Police Interceptor. Other than the movie Robocop, it's the first time Ford's Taurus has served as a purpose-built patrol car.

Ford actually sold police package Taurus' back during the early 90's that were somewhat popular with smaller police departments. I used to see a bunch of them running around in the suburbs. They never really became popular as a whole because of their FWD based platform. I believe the police Taurus' came with the 150hp 3.8 litre OHV V6, transmission with special calibrations, and a heavier duty suspension if i'm not mistaken.

Lots of police departments are skeptical about using the new Taurus for police duty due to it being FWD based, and having a limited amount of space due to the console shifter(Police CV's had a column shifter). On the plus side, I wonder if they will be able to order Ecoboost versions.......

I like the Taurus option better, especially since i'm the former owner of a Taurus SHO before. Those Taurus cop cars with the Ecoboost are going to be so fun for those cops to drive. 365hp and instant on torque at very low rpms.

I have cops for clients and they have said they want as much metal to protect them as possible when I asked why one of the more expensive models are converted to police cars.

When you start putting turbochargers in these the maintenance costs are going to go up and that is bad for town/city budgets too.

Fuel mileage goes up too though so only time will tell I guess.

Fords new Ecoboost system is supposed to be about as maintenance free as turbochargers will get. They have come a long way, although these arguments won't persuade someone stuck in tradition as turbos USED to be high maintenance.

The Pontiac G8 doesn't actually have a whole lot of metal as one might think. The days of the old 1990's style Caprice and Buick Roadmasters are gone, as these new Caprices are significantly smaller. If they really want a BIG car, I suspect that they would have to seriously consider the current police package Dudge Charger which is available with both V6 and V8 packages. Of course they would also be buying a car from a company with serious quality control problems that is about to be owned by some Italian company that also suffered from huge quality control problems back when they were in the US market. Visually, the new Taurus appears to be beefier. I really wanted one of those new Taurus SHO's bad, but couldn't swing the price tag and decided on my current 2010 Fusion Hybrid.
