Default New Ride

Just picked up a CPO '06 S2000. I've wanted one of these since they first came out. It was finnaly the right car at the right time. Could not be happier.

Nice car

Is that the model with the 9000rpm redline?
Either way those things scream!

'04+ have a 8300 redline after they lengthened the stroke to get more midrange torque. Car is seriously fun to drive, like a street legal go-cart or a 4 wheel motorcycle.

Wondering why this car never took off. I heard a lot of good things about it.

A bit on the expensive side and it has a limited market.

I owned a Suzuka Blue 02 with optional hardtop for a short while, before ultimately getting rid of it due to high insurance costs and limited practicality. They are like a street legal go cart, but the lack of amenities in especially the earlier years were brutal if you were used to some of the basic creature comforts. As Emil said, the market for one of these are extremely limited as well.

They are also extremely fun on an open highway, but not very easy to drive if you are putzing around town and that is mainly due to the incredibly limited torque you had available. The 9000rpms redline(9300rpms actually) was absolutely magical though when you do vtec the motor. The motor was not very special until you hit the 6500rpm vtec crossover, and then it takes off as the engine roars and comes to life.

I wouldn't say they never took off. The car has a strong following and Honda made them from '00 - '09. Like others have said however, it is not practical as an every day car. It is low, loud, and has limited room for storage or passengers (although the trunk is decent for a car this size). I can't see having one if I didn't have another car to use as a daily driver/grocery getter.

The drivetrain on those S2000's simply couldn't handle it, and would need some serious overhauling to be done. I remember back when I owned one, watching how many people blew up their transmission, CV joints, and burnt out their clutches after doing serious power mods. The stock drivetrain was designed for precision, and drivability and not designed to handle brute force like a Mustang Cobra's drivetrain.

Don't know why anyone would need more than 240hp in a car this size.

You are correct in that part of the driving experience is about the balance of the car. IMHO, the car needs a bit more power, but a turbo is likely going to throw the balance of the car off. Turbos depending on how quickly they spool, can throw the balance of a car off and be dangerous if you happen to be canyon carving when the car generates boost.
