If you look at sales of Mustangs in 1988, I'll bet they sold just as many or maybe even more 4 cyl stangs than 8 cylinder ones.

I don't want to drive a Fiesta or Fusion, I want to drive a new Mustang with a 4 cylinder. The 2.8L engine is a good little engine and it can be modified to make serious horsepower as well. I have seen a couple turbo 4 cylinder run high 8's low 9's around 150 mph at the dragstrip. :
If you are thinking of the SVO engine, it is a lot different engine than the standard 4 cylinder engine. Those tend to blow up when a SVO or Turbocoupe turbo is bolted on. Just about everything is different in the turbo engine. Besides, what was being talked about was gas mileage. My son had a '86 SVO and it got mileage like a GT did. Put a turbo on a 4 cylinder that is capable of 15 pounds boost and you effectively have a V8. But getting 50 HP per cylinder takes a different engine than getting 22 HP per cylinder.

As a follow on to the above, here are some sales figures:

71: 151,484 - http://www.themustangsource.com/timeline/71-73/71/
72: 125.813 - http://www.themustangsource.com/timeline/71-73/72/
73: 134,817 - http://www.themustangsource.com/timeline/71-73/73/

74: 385,993 - http://www.themustangsource.com/time...8/74/index.htm
75: 188,575 - http://www.themustangsource.com/time...8/75/index.htm
76: 187,567 - http://www.themustangsource.com/time...8/76/index.htm
77: 153,173 - http://www.themustangsource.com/time...8/77/index.htm
78: 192,410 - http://www.themustangsource.com/time...8/78/index.htm

The Mustang II is widely though of as the sales falling off, but in truth every year of the generation outsold the 71-73 Mustangs. In fact you have to go back to 1967 for sales that eclipsed the 74 Mustang.

For all other years see: http://www.themustangsource.com/timeline/

Looks like Shelby is going to be offering a 624 horsepower Mustang this year

I think it is safe to say that this borders on insanity. Even if I somehow won the lottery, i'm not sure I would have enough balls to floor the loud pedal in a car with this much power.

Already got your deposit in on a 525-horsepower 2011 Shelby GT350? You may want to give them another call, as they've just announced a new 624-horsepower "R" tune upgrade you'll want to get in on.

Wow, that's a bunch of horsepower. Just wait till the govt' safety guys realize what's going on right now with all the hi hp cars being made. You'll probably have to get a special license and psychological screening so you won't kill someone. Actually it's probably a good idea .

Something like this probably makes your Terminator feel insignificant until you see the price tag. The 520hp Shelby GT350 supposedly will run $62k, so I would not doubt that this 624hp version will be in the neighborhood of around $80-90k.

You're right about that but I know I can easily get that hp for about 8K, also 35K(car price) + 8K is still considerably under 62K!
But I'm getting old, I got about 475 crank hp, it's just gonna have to do .

You'll be happy to know that the 5.0 coming soon is already being put throug it's paces.

Tuners are seeing over 500hp with FFRP superchargers at 9 psi
Weekend bolt on, ECU tune, and some LCA's and slicks they've already got one down in the 11 second range in the quarter mile.

Bravo Ford.

The thing is freakin' awesome!

It only took them 8 years(since the last svt) to do it but they did.

See, that makes me nervous as hell because i'm not sure the new 5.0 is designed to handle forced induction very well. I guess time will tell, but the 5.0 has actually been out for a while. I saw one last week and I was honestly a bit disappointed as they don't sound as good as the previous Ford v8's have sounded. It seems like the more technologically advanced a v8 becomes, the less it sounds like a traditional v8.

The best sound is the scream you let out when it plasters you into the seat!

The old 4.6 termi motor was specifically designed for a blower, that's what makes it possible to get 600hp out of it without touching the bottom end. You're right, not too sure how "overbuilt" the 5.0 is.

Your old Terminator v8's don't even sound like the v8's I remember from Ford. From a Mustang perspective, I don't think anything sounds better than the 01 Cobra, and the older Windsor 302 based Mustangs. The 01 Cobra sounded especially awesome as it came from the factory with an incredibly aggressive exhaust on it. Much better and louder than the 99 Cobra's.

Honestly, i'd rather have the whoosh of a twin turbo setup. I love superchargers, but there is just something awesome and exotic about turbos. It is clear that Ford is heavily committed to the use of turbos now, and that makes me happy. I can't believe that the new 2011 F150's now come with a twin turbo option that produces 420lb-ft of torque as low as 1500-1800rpms if i'm not mistaken. One of the magazines(possibly Automobilemag) was testing one and mentioned they were getting high 20's on the highway. In a full size pickup truck, that is phenomenal.

Whoosh!

You have no idea how turned on I get when i'm next to a semi on the highway and I hear the big turbos spool up and whistle. I had a SVT Lightning before, and I have to admit that the blower whine is cool until you start getting tired of it.
