Default New problem: rattling coming from front of car

My car is due for a tune-up, so I can get this checked out shortly, but was wondering if any of you had any insight.

2001.5 VW Passat, 113K miles.

From the front of the car (sounds like front passenger wheel area, but sounds when sitting in the car are often tricky to tell where they are coming from). Sound like a wooden ball rattling around in a steel can. If anyone heard their CV housing going bad, it sounds EXACTLY like that. Except when the CV boots go bad, the rattling pretty much only happens when turning, especially when accelerating and turning. This sound I only hear when going straight, and at lower speeds (not to say it is gone at higher speeds, but the engine and road noise may mask it). But I have never heard it when turning.

I've had both CV boots go bad, and didn't correct it until too late and had to replace both axles. This was 2 years ago. Additionally, I am driving on a full-sized spare on the front passenger side. Waiting to get the flat fixed. I can't imagine it has anything to do with it, but you never know.

Any ideas?

Crawl under there and grab the halfshafts to see if they are loose.

Not exactly sure what a half shaft is, but I assume it is a shorter axle like thing attached to the wheel. I'll check it out sometime this weekend. Thanks.

Sorry, correct assumption .
It's the axle that connects the differential to the wheels through the CV joint.

Sounds like your bearings are going bad, hub bearings. what you axle goes into at the knuckle. If you don't know what a half shaft is, and or are riding around on the spare, AND rode around with the CV boots popped. You probably won't be able to do this repair on your own. However, get ready to un-a$$ some cash because they will charge you good for the repair. Even though doing it yourself would only net about $200.00 in parts.
