Question setup question

I just purchased a Panasonic 50" Plasma HDTV with 2 hdmi inputs onboard and plan to use my older sony home theater reciever 5.1 dolby digital model STR-K502 with 2 digital input jacks. I also have a dvd/ld coaxial cable on the reciever. Can i convert from hdmi to the 5.1 system or do i need to upgrade my reciever to accomodate the hdmi?
thanks in advance.

That depends on what you plan to connect to the receiver. As you stated, that receiver has 3 digital inputs (2 optical/1 coax). You can connect your component to the TV via component video or HDMI. And then connect them to the receiver via the 3 digital connections for DD 5.1. and DTS..

Please list what you plan to connect..

Then your current receiver is fine with DD 5.1 and DTS. Just connect the Dish STB and DVD player to the TV via component video or HDMI. Connect the audio seperate to the receiver via digital optical or digital coax. You won't get any audio benifit with HDMI over optical with those 2 devices. Down the road if you get an HD DVD or BD player, you may want to upgrade.

Im having a problem that sounds like someone in this thread could resolve.

I have my HD DVR and and AppleTV connected to my Pioneer plasma via HDMI and a digital optical audio cable from the plasma to my Sony surround system; the audio from my HDMI connected devices is not passing onto the surround system but the exact same two devices pass the audio through when connected via component..

Any trick I need to perform to get the HDMI connections to pass the audio properly as they do when hooked up via component?

Thanks!
