Exclamation Please Help! Can't get Dolby 5.1 with HDMI

I have a Samsung DLP, model HL-5078W. It's a little over two years old. I also have a Fios HD-DVR STB and an NAD receiver. According to the Samsung manual, I should be able to connect the STB to the TV via HDMI, and then get Dolby 5.1 sound by running an optical cable from the TV's digital out to the NAD's optical input, and then switching the "Digital Output" selection on the TVs sound menu from "PCM" to "Dolby". The problem is that the Digital Output selection on the TV is greyed out and I can't select it. This is driving me nuts. The problem's not with the optical output on the TV, because I have the TV's internal mute on and the HDMI input's audio is working through my receiver--it's just that I can't get the signal in anything other than stereo. Has anyone ever had this problem or no a means of fixing it? Thanks a ton in advance for any help.

some times you will not get out put from optical out of tv because there is no DD in programs (analog channels), i have connected my optical out from Samsung LCD to receiver it works fine no matter what source i am running (OTA analoge audio will not output sound from optical). mute should be off, optical out put has nothing to do with tv speakers out.

It's definitely not an analog chanbnel. I tested on an HD program, and I got Dolby 5.1 when I switched the TV to the Component input, as I have a coaxial digital cable connection from the STB to the receiver. The manual specifies that if you are connecting the tv's digitial audio output to a receiver with a 5.1 decoder, that you should switch the Digital Output menu selection to "Dolby". Since it's greyed out and defaulted to "PCM" bitstream, I cannot switch it to send a 5.1 audio signal to my receiver.

The optical out on the tv passes stereo only, unless you are using an antenna.

Run an optical cable directly from the stb into the receiver and you'll get surround. You can still use the HDMI into the tv from the stb, just keep the sound from the tv off.

All hd tvs are the same.

Your samsung will not give you 5.1 signals if the source is from a dvd or cable box. LIke someone said earlier, you'd have to connect your cable box or dvd player directly to the receiver. This is also a hinderance to me.

From what I see from Daleb, in order to get my Samsung UN46UNC8000 to output Dolby Digital to my SPDIF output I need only to turn off the tv's speaker output.?
I also see someone saying that if the TV monitor has its input is set to HDMI then Dolby Digital out to my SPDIF output is not possible?
If this is true is then is switching to the TV's Internet connection / "Internet Mode" to stream video (like from NetFlix) enables Dolby Digital ?

Thanks for your help
