Default Speaker Wire for the MISINFORMED

Although realitively new to HD, I've been involved in Hi-Fi (starting professionally in '85) for sometime. Speaker wire DOES color the sound...the better the equipement, the more noticable the difference.
Steps to compare:
1)Turn off the video (audio only i.e. CD's)
2)Play very familiar well engenieered music
3)Play for a few days (to get used to one wire) then switch.

If you have an open mind but still hear no difference BUY CHEAP.
But remember, like video cables, passing a signal is always colored by the wire.

Most will be happy with decent wire ($1-5 per foot). Keep your lengths as equal as possible to each set (8' for fronts, 20' for rears).
All of these steps will help your surround to trick your brain into believing you are in the program!

What about those itsy-bitsy speaker and power wires inside the Speakers and the Amp - don't they need to be replaced if you spring for the "Monster" connections - and how about replacing all your AC wiring out to the Pole Pig to get the "the more noticable the difference"

As you well know the tranformer in ths amp is as far back as most reasonable people are willing to admit wire will change the sound. I leave it to the quality manufacturers to not shoot themselves in the foot by using crappy wire inside their products ( and indeed, most do not).
But judging from many of your replies Maicaw, you know that quality is sometimes inexpensive but never cheap. I encourage all to follow the steps listed above and decide (once again without video to distract you) if there is a sigificant difference in wire.
A $300 set of cables won't do all that much for a 1980 TV, but put it on my Bravia and the difference is easily seen.

But I digress...All audio/video is cost vs. quality (see insert). A small increase make a big change on the lower end, but it takes a huge increase in money to make a change in quality at the upper end. The real question is where each individual feels justified in spending his own hard earned dollars along this path.Cost_vs._Quality.jpg

There is zero scientific evidence to support your claim. In many double blind tests most people could tell no difference between $1000 speaker wire and lamp cord. A wire is just supposed to let the electrons flow. It is not like the electrons will flow differently in audioquests Everest cables. There is scientific proof that guage can make a difference over longer runs, the I^2*R looses are dropped with thicker speaker wire. The high end cabling companies rely on "faith" and prestige to convince people that there cables sound better. They definitely rely on the placebo effect which is if a person spent a lot of money then it has to sound better. They convince themselves of this while hooking up their WAAAAYYYYYY overprice wire. If you feel that fatter ultra expensive cables enhance your listening and viewing pleasure then there are numerous outfits that will overcharge you for this.

The only thing that matters if someone can hear the difference.

Some time ago I read an article in Stereo magazine and the tests showed that the vast majority of the people tested cannot begin to hear harminic distortion until it gets close to 1%. So much for amps with .001 (or whatever) distortion.

So, scores of articles don't necessarily relate to what you actually hear. And they are not necessarily scientific proof that more expensive cables produce a better sound that you can hear.

List was shortened for brevity....

But, like I said before, it don't mean poop if your equipment (and ears) don't hear the difference.
You won't hear the difference between you super fancy speaker cable that you spent way too much for and some 14 gauge cable from Home Depot. Copper speaker wire is copper speaker wire. As I said before the exotic cable manufacturers rely on placebo effect. They say [email protected] like you have to let the wire break-in? WTF, wire does not break in!!!!!!! They tout oxygen free copper which is the most completely overrated over used term when it comes to cable. I have found old wire at garage sales that were over 20 years old, cut them open and the copper was still bright and shiny.

The cable manufacturers recommend you let your system get used to the wire. GET USED???!!!!!! What does that mean. The period of getting used to the wire is usually past the return policy.

There is no scientific proof that fancy speaker, audio, video cable makes a difference in sound and picture. Name me one source that is not sponsored by a cable manufacturer or do not used terms like improved presence, enhanced soundstage, etc. Those are fancy ambiguous terms to impress the lesser educated people of the world to part with their cash.

How about the schiesters that tell you to get some cable elevators!!!! What a crock.

I guess the folks over at www.audioholics.com are MISINFORMED like me. They feel exacltly the same as I do. They need you to set them straight.

At any rate, it is your money. If you feel that your audio experience is enhanced by spending lasrge sums of cash on copper wire then go ahead.

Stchman,

While I greatly appreciate your experience and knowledge of HD, your knowledge of high-end audio is lacking as is the geniuses at http://www.audioholics.com/.
Not one word about listening and direct comparison of wire on their "reference systems" (which were highly mediocre in terms of audio equipment) in their Face Off articles.

"We feel choosing a speaker cable should be a function of electrical performance, build quality, durability, longevity and system compatibility."

If your Yamaha receiver & electrical cord is adequate for your needs, I'm happy for you. For those of us looking to make our systems better, your advice is like saying to stick with the yellow, red, & white wires that came with our VCR's...

P.S. I list my AV components only, not my reference audio system in the other room.

For a VCR, the red/white/yellow is more than adequate as VHS sucks.

I am a scientific person. Until I can see some empiracal data to support superior cabling I am going to remain firmly where I am.

I personally use HDMI for my HD and DVD viewing, Acoustic Research coax for the digital sound on the DVD, an $8 fiber optic cable for the sat box, and some 14 gauge speaker wire I got at Home Depot. Just for grins I got a $60 AR HDMI cable and saw no PQ difference on my sat box (as expected).

"I am a scientific person. Until I can see some empiracal data ..."

Cash in that Sony DVD for an off brand. Their outputs are as close emperically as the speaker wire. While your at it, trade your Yamaha for an RCA!
I guess perception counts...

I dont have a Yamaha I have a Pioneer. I had a Toshiba DVD player and I got rid of the Toshiba in favor of the Sony after I saw how much better the PQ was. There is some form of empiracal data about PQ from one DVD player to another. Bring in some people, blindfold them, then switch speaker wires (at least 4 differerent brands), and then ask them to tell you wich speaker wire sounds better. You can have three different brands of mid grade wire and your precious Kimbers. I guarantee that not everyone will tell you the Kimbers sound the best. Please tell me that you dont believe in cable break in BS.

No, if my cable or anything else breaks in, I'll shoot it. But I challange you to watch (for a few days) with some really nice component cables and then switch back to the cheapest one you can find. The difference is much more pronounced going fron good to bad than vice-versa. It takes time for our senses to get used tothe better quality.
The same is true for audio (although not as obvious because we use our eyes more than our ears). There are those on the fringe (that you so love to abuse) that hear things I don't because my ears are not as well trained. I DON'T WANT THEM TO BE (that stuff gets rediculously expensive) see the curve chart above.
I do suggest that most every one can benefit, with a modest improvement in cables, by having a more accurate recreation of our favorite sound tracks. I rarely listen to TV through the TV speakers because I miss the sounds that trick my brain into becoming more involved in the program.
I would encourage everyone to live with better cables for a while and then switch back to their old standard. You may find the inexpensive cables suit your ear better! There are differences, but are they positive and are they worth any additional dollars?

One method of considering impedance is being comprised of reactive and resistance values and therefore related to resistance and capacitance. In a standard audio cable for example, the internal impedances are between 35-ohms and 50-ohms. Since they are designed to carry low frequencies (20Hz to 20kHz), resulting in much longer wavelengths than the length of the cables themselves, audio cables by their design, aren't concerned with characteristic impedance as much as lumped R,L,C parameters. However, if audio cables are used in place of component video cables, or poorly constructed component video cables are used that are not a true 75-ohm characteristic impedance, the lower impedance value of these cables may result in a partial signal reflection do to a mismatch in impedance, depending on the length of the cable.

2.1 Internal Impedance of 75-ohms

Cables do make a difference in the realm of impedance, wavelengths etc..., but can it really be a perceived difference?

Cable manufacturers talk of a spiritual load of BS. Become one with the cables. If they are so much superior then the differences should be so obvious that it would be like watching an old 13" black and white portable TV to a $10,000 Plasma. I can make that comparision as the really high end cables cost thousands and the cheapies cost about $10. The notion of paying orders of magnitude more money to get what is believed a few percent difference. I used the term believed as the placebo effect is in use when that amount of money is spent.
