Getting harder to lower cable bill!!!

Default Getting harder to lower cable bill!!!

Awhile back I put up a post about calling and getting your bill lower!! Well, Cox doesn't seem to care anymore with Fios in our area. I have had 3 people I know call and try to get lower rates and were told NO!! My promo rate after 14 months is going away in June and so is my Cable!! If you live in Fairfax County VA and have COX PM me and I will give you the direct line to a person I have dealt with. If more people call they will have to do something!!

I think they're beginning to realize that "word has gotten out on the Internet" that "squeaky wheels get the grease" so they are curtailing the extent to which they do lower cable bills on request, as they have in the past. Previously they did so because a good number of the folks calling in actually would have switched away if their bills were not lowered. Now they know that a good number of folks calling in are just trying to "work the system". (It should be noted that I did just recently get one of these $40 reductions, good for six months -- but perhaps they keep track of how many times you ask for that reduction, and after once or twice, they stop granting it.)

Beyond that, I think it is becoming clearer that the grass isn't always greener on the other side. I have records of an eighteen month campaign of mine to get FiOS to provide service to my part of the street, after they ran the fiber past our home in summer of 2007. Once I was finally successful, I started getting inundated with offers to switch to FiOS -- which was great as far as I was concerned. Then, I started gathering the information about how much it would cost me to replicate the service I had with Comcast. FiOS wanted a lot more money (mostly because of how many televisions I have cable service on). I also started gathering information about what I have to do to reconfigure multi-destination port-forwarding, and CableCARD pairing, etc. It was pretty significant -- I would have to learn about router bridging, and a whole bunch of new things that I didn't have to know with Comcast.

So all this great promise of competition was really just propaganda anti-cable people fabricated. Competition comes to town, and effectively they want more money, not less, and they make things more complicated, not simpler. In our town we have Comcast, RCN, FiOS, Dish Network and DirecTV, and the legacy cable company, Comcast, is still the very best option, given all the parameters, for many people.

I understand your desire to get that great price break, but I think what you're encountering is this fiction you've been sold in the past finally hitting the brick wall of reality.

I completely agree with all of what Bicker stated. I keep getting these teaser promotions from Directv, Dish, ATT&T Uverse, etc. But once I duplicate the setup and programming I have with Comcast, I would be paying substantially more $$ if I switch.

I have been able to successfully "work the system". The latest success was just last month. I have been on the promotional Triple Play package for $99/month, with some extras thrown in, for 2 years now.

A promo rate is just that. A rate to attract customers. Beware that most promos come with a contract. Your more than welcome to change your provider once your contract has expired. But in the long run, bundled services are where your savings are. Also a company is willing to offer more freebies to someone who is getting all the products they offer vs someone who is just getting basic service. Also take into concideration that each time you change providers you have to have something done to the overall wiring scheme of your house. Over time, your house wiring can get all messed up, esp if the tech is overbooked, under trained, or under paid. This can cost you more in the long run.
A friend of mine, after the promo period called to see if she could get on another promo was told by the csr "You have to pay full price at some time"

I got everything they got to offer and my bill was just climbing near $300 a month for every HBO/SHO an etc. plus 2x DVR HDTV boxes, 1 HDTV box and 1 digital box. I have to wait until my area gets updated so I can use 4 DVRs. I got 8 connections wired, top Internet 20/5 plan and digital phone. Got them go give me everything for $218 including taxes an etc.. a month for next 2 years.
