Default What are the economics of HD?

Our local news is in high definition. Most (but not all) of their field reports are in HD. Their set looks stunning. Why isn't national news in HD? Is it that much harder to buy an HD camera and HD broadcast stuff? How come a million dollar network can't afford HD news but our little local affiliate can?

Our digital cable provider (Cox) has lots of bandwidth but only 12 HD channels. I know there are a lot more HD channels which they could be offering (e.g. TNT-HD, HDNet, etc.). Are the fees so high for these channels that they can't afford to offer them?

Yeah, I'm not complaining too much. But what I meant is that somehow our local news can afford to broadcast in HD whereas the national news can't. Seems upside down.

If you try to logically explain why certain shows are in HD and others aren't, your head will explode.

The most confusing situation was the Texas/Ohio State game on ABC a few weeks ago. A national broadcaster, showing what may be the biggest college football game of the year on their station, elects to show it in standard definition. Meanwhile, ESPN and ESPN2, both in the same general company as ABC, were finding ways to show little league women's softball in HD, in addition to less important college football games in HD.

The best way to explain the situation is this...some stations get it, and some don't. But HD is getting much more widespread, but the bonehead broadcasting decisions are still out there.
