Default Popping sounds and DAC questions...

I'm an old analog fart, it seems, and I bought my first Blu-Ray player. Then I realized that it's not just a matter of using a different kind of cable...

The one BD I have (Stranger Things series) creates intermittent popping sounds. Quite audible and every few minutes in DTS-HD (season 2...), much less so in TrueHD (Season 1...) and not at all in DD (@$&*&$# unskippable 5-minute Netflix preview).

That hints to some processing issue.

This is a basic Sony BDP-S1700 player, and it's connected directly to my cheapo AOC TV via HDMI. I guess that it might be:

A) Poor processing in the player
OR
B) Poor DAC in the TV

I've tried every BDP audio setting, including PCM, to no avail.

I think it all depends on what the BDP actually sends, which leads to two questions:

1) Is the player and HDMI smart enough to automagically detect that my TV's about as high-tech as a stick of celery and send stupid two-channel PCM to it? (but then source audio format should make no diff, right?) Or does the TV DAC also perform downmixing? (then TrueHD vs. DTS could indeed yield different results...)

2) Would using the coax SPDIF BDP output change things? TV doesn't have it, but I have eyes on the Behringer MS20 speakers, which have their own DAC.

As you can see, I'm a bit lost in digital translation.

Default

I have confirmed the issue comes from the TV.
I'm still in the dark as to what a Blu-Ray player's Coax actually outputs and therefore what would happen if connected to an external DAC that's not meant to support any surround at all - or one that tops at 48kHz!
