If money is no object, go OPPO; best player, at any price.
Even Goldmund, uses their Blu-Ray internals!

I am pretty much in the same boat as the OP. I've been sitting still with my HD-DVD player (Toshi XA-2) for several years and am now considering the move up. In the interim, I've not even kept up with what is out there these days.

Everyone has said for the best..get Oppo. Which Oppo is it that everyone thinks is best?

I've been looking at the Sony BDPS6700, as it appears I can also replace my aging Apple TV as well. Any thoughts on this one? Others that are better?

(PS---- Just saw the date one this one. Sorry to resurrect the dead)

No problem - modern blu-ray players have equalized for the most pert. Just find one that has the features you want such as netflix streaming, hulu on demand etc. if that is important to you and you will be fine.

1. makers dont seem to want to give support for any older gadgets that maybe out of warranty.
as the player ages will i still be able to get updates?
2. from what i heard BRay players wont play new BRay disks and features without updating. if it's lucky enough to make through the warranty and beyond as it ages will it still play the newer BRP disks and all the new features because of the lack of support and updates?

Most companies do auto-updates* for at least 2yrs, after that you can download 'current updates from their support links'.
*If your ethernet connected, if not then you have to download and install.

Blu-ray players will always be BR Disc ready.
But they will NOT playback 4K material
If you buy a current 4K player, you will have playing access to 4KUHD-BluRay & CD's

Most often updates inc to update current features/options. also any possibly upgrades-updates to correct, found or reported issues, and glitches.

Will standard B-Ray discs still be available in the future or get pushed out to 4k?

Better product providers pursue problems from owners reporting glitches. With regard to functions, they update their onboard circuits periodically.
My personal player recently did an update to recode to decipher HDR10 in playback.
