Oh no...Help with Samsung DLP

Samsung HLR-5678W. Just noticed that I have a line on the left side of the screen that starts approximately 1/2" from the bottom and "bows out" to approximately 1/2" wide in the middle, then stops approximately 1/2" from the top. The line or bar is not solid it is semi-transparent, meaning that you can still see the picture behind it. The TV has still has the original lamp in it (at least 3 1/2 - 4 years now). Hoping it's not the light tunnel. What do you folks think?

Any help would be appreciated...

It's not the lamp. Time to call for service...possibly a DMD board.

Is that something that is "user replaceable"? If not, what can I anticipate a repair bill to be?

Do a search on "Samsung Side Shadow" on google and click on the link for a v s forum you will find there, about third one down. Sounds like that, and if it is the "light tunnel collapse" just follow the instructions in the link for a free extended warranty repair.

And check the link from this forum:

clearday -

Thanks for the info. Based on reading that thread at AVS, I've placed a call to Samsung. I just need to get them the TV's serial number, and they will cover the repair at no charge. I will post once I have resolution...

Good to hear. Just watch out for the service shop they may have you call. Lately some posters have had some local shops demand a $135 service call to "diagnose" the problem before they will do the job. And one told the person that the collapsed light tunnel wasn't the problem (when it was) and took the money and refused to do any repair.

So, it isn't Samsung but the local shops acting up. If you run into that, just call Samsung back and get another repair shop to come out. You shouldn't have to pay anyone anything.

Keep us posted.

Hi,it sounds like an issue with the light engine tunnel.Maybe a mirror is on a wrong position .It could be also a Dmd issue .Good thing samsung is replacing it for you ,this seems like a normal failure on these samsungs.God bless .:)

Hopefully it will be confirmed to be the light tunnel. If it's the DMD board, I could be screwed. From what I've read at AVS it is almost certainly a mirror issue. We'll see what happens. I will definitely post the end results...

Was finally able to get Samsung to schedule an appointment to replace the light engine (at no cost). And yes, the service center did initially try to bill me $99 for the visit. Called Samsung back and talked to their executive-level support and stated no way I would be paying for a repair that they have agreed to fix under warranty. They took care of it for me. I'll let you folks know how I make out (scheduled for this Friday)...

The whole light engine? or just the light tunnel. I'm thinking the light tunnel.

The part is being dropped shipped to me tomorrow. I'm pretty sure it's just going to be the light tunnel as well. Seems to be some differing opinions out there as to what exactly they'll replace. Some have had the repair done and it included the entire light engine (complete with a new bulb). I'll know more on Friday...

Seems to be an issue with Samsung DLP. Mine had been replaced 3 times already, once last month for free on a set I bought in 2006

Part arrived today. Very small box - me thinks just a light tunnel. More to follow once the tech shows up for the repair...

Well, tech was supposed to come today between 8 and 11. No show!!! Called the center that scheduled the appointment, they can't account for the reason the tech didn't show. Will now have to reschedule. But on a positive note, I was in the service menu and noted that my lamp has 15,720 hours on it. Not bad for the original lamp. I'll keep you folks posted on how I make out with the reschedule...

Now rescheduled for this Thursday between 5pm-8pm. We'll see if the tech shows...

When my DLP had the light tunnel collapse, they replaced the whole light engine and replaced the lamp & color wheel also under my BB warranty.

Box is too small for all of that. I'm thinking they just shipped a replacement light tunnel. At this point, I'd just be happy for that...

What a nightmare!!! The "tech" showed up yesterday to replace the light tunnel, and after 2 1/2 hours and the 3 calls he made to Samsung's tech support the repair was complete. My luck, this is the first DLP TV he's ever repaired. I seemed to know more about the inner workings of the device than he did. Long and short, it's fixed and cost me nothing. Picture looks great, and no side-shadow.

Glad it worked out for you.
