I recently hooked up a little Sony surround sound system to my TV, and have had a few problems trying to get my sons Xbox 360 audio to play through the surround sound.

Here's my setup:

Samsung HDTV
Xbox 360
Samsung Blu Ray
Sony Surround Sound

-The Xbox 360 and Blu Ray each have an HDMI cable running to the tv, under HDMI1 and HDMI2.

-The Blu Ray player also has Red/White audio cables running directly into the sound system.

-The TV has the Red/White audio cables running directly into the sound system.

First off, doesn't the fact that I'm running my audio into the surround sound through the Red/White cables defeat the purpose of surround sound?

Second, I can watch TV channels with audio from the surround sound, I can watch movies on Blu Ray with audio from the surround sound, but when I switch the source on the TV over to the Xbox 360, I lose the sound from the surround sound.

Help would be much appreciated.

What is the receiver in question? How is the 360 connected for audio?

Yes, using the red and white analog audio will not produce true surround sound (DD 5.1/DTS). I will allow for 2 channel PL or a kind of sudo surround. Not bad but not nearly as good as DD 5.1/DTS. Does your receiver have optical inputs? Does not sound like it.

The 360 is connected for audio through the HDMI cable running from the Xbox 360 to the back of the TV. Then, the TV has an audio out through the red/white cable connected to the receiver.

I'm guessing the TV can't convert the HDMI sound input to a red/white output?

I highly doubt the optical input question, the receiver is a few years old (2005 or 2006) and was on the lower end. It has a digital input which emits a red light however.

The Xbox 360 came with the non-HDMI setup cord, which had the five different plugs (component) and a Digital out slot for sound. From my understanding this doesn't produce as nice a picture, so I opted for the HDMI cable.
