I have directv and want to get a DVR. I dont have a landline is it still possible for me to do this? Does the channel lineups come through the satellite or the phone line?

You will need a phone line to set up the TiVo account. Once it is set up, you don't need the phone line anymore. The guide comes through the satellite.

It was a real pain in the you know what for me, I had to get a line put in that I did not want. Tivo does have a DVR with home network kit for broadband but then you would need to subscribe to Tivo.

So, if I go to a buddys house and hook it up to his phone line then disconnect it and hook it up at my house I should be fine? I have broadband so that is a possibility also. Man, I wonder which way is better.

No!! you need to activate it and do a test phone connection while at your friends house.

What's the deal with not taking the time to run another phone jack? If it was your sat input, you would bust a hump so why not now?
