Not sure about DirecTV's HD DVR receiver specifically, but many here have been able to negotiate the price down on other DirecTV HD receivers by as much as half the official price. Call them and give it a shot by saying you will move over to Dish if you don't get a break on the price.

Call DirecTV and ask for Customer Retention, then explain your situation and negotiate the price. It works.

I'm in the same situation, but have you considered moving over to cable? It's a lot cheaper to go HD with cable, you don't have to buy the DVR (TIVO-like device), you get local channels HD without an antenna, but I've been very happy with DirecTV and have doubts about the quality of cable vs. DirecTV.

I think they caught on, I just called and it did not work for me, hell I said I was a phone call away from Charter Cable and he didnt even make me an offer.

Interesting thou is that I asked him about the new DVR'S rolling out in early 06 and he said he was aware of it, everyone else there has played stupid about it.

Hard to believe that they wouldn't negotiate. I've done it numerous times and always got a good deal. Could it be cuz I'm a long standing DirecTV customer who has had Sunday Ticket and other upgrades for many years?

If it's been "done to death" that's probably because D*Tv is ripping off people when it comes to the equipment purchases and HD upgrades. I have the same situation; I'm going to be buying an HDTV soon, and I have to decide where I want to get the HD programming from. Comcast is looking pretty good right now, and that's saying a LOT.

Its a tough call, I should have done my research before I left Charter.
