Is it true that High Def satellite signals are encrypted where you can't record any High Def directv programming on a dvd recorder?

If this is true, I am sticking with my 1995 27" Zenith

Are there plans to go this route in the future if it is not already in progress?

The encryption has nothing to do with it. Current DVD recorders cannot decode the High resolution. Current DVD's can only hold a resolution at 480p. In order to record a High Def program, you must set your HD tuner to 480i or 480p in order for your recorder to decifer the information!

I have a LiteOn dvd recorder hooked up to my HD receiver. The connection is only s-video but I can record the HD programs to the hard drive in the recorder and then push it to a dvd. What I am recording, though, is downsampled to 480 even though it retains the 16.9 picture. It's not too bad until I can get an HD recorder.

The ONLY output form of HDTV that's recordable is via Firewire (still compressed) and that is copy restricted. Your HD cable STB may not allow you to record a PPV show, for example. Broadcast HD OTA is currently unrestricted.
