Is there a reason why HD Cable boxes cost so much?

I was thinking about getting another HDTV but looking at these prices Ill probably wait until the holidays.

I can get another PS3 at that price!

Is the cable company jacking consumers? how come satellite boxes are a third of the price? Looking at these motorola boxes it looks like theyre probably worth $20 made in some factory in China.

I agree...this seems very expensive considering it's not a DVR (didn't see any reference to HD recording in the specs).

just about every cable company is "jacking consumers" - it seems to be even worse in Canada with all the additional taxes.

Does your cable company require you to purchase a cable box ? Most US cable companies "rent" the boxes (and they usually include a DVR). Granted you will pay for the box in several years, but you don't have to worry about maintenance or replacements.

What I dont get is why satellite boxes are so much cheaper. Are they cheaper in the states too?
