It's mostly bad news, but there's a silver lining for DVD retailers: The recession, not the spread of digital video distribution, is what's driving notable declines in disc purchasing.

"The impact of online video consumption looks to be overstated, considering the amount of press it receives as a threat to packaged media," Nielsen researchers said.

Seriously, everybody I know has cut back in one way or another. I know I think twice blind buying movies and I look for deals now more than ever. Once the economy starts to recover and consumer fears are eased, I think you will see sales pick back up for home video (along with everything else).

Home video sales are very surprising in the face of this economy. Frankly I am more impressed with how well DVD sales are holding steady then the increasing Blu-ray sales. In any case, it bodes well for home video.

Me too. I'm especially impressed with top 20 DVD sales. Thats even going to get better as some of the big 2009 movies hit release time later in the year.
