Hi guys,

I hate plasma displays. Those milky blacks just kill me.

I want to switch but after researching I'm just confused as to what to get. A tech who was fixing an other TV at my house started laughing when I said DLP.

Any suggestions? Looking in the 37">44" range.

Thnx

He probably laughed because he doesn't know how to fix them and will lose work if everyone buys DLP.

EVERY technology has trade offs. If you leave out plasma, LCD & DLP that only leaves LCD flat panels or CRT as of right now. I think you should wait a couple of years and see what SED might bring to the table. It won't be perfect either I am afraid.

Man, what kind of plasmas were you looking at..? Chinese, Korean....holy moly.....a good plasma will have blacks at least as good as a CRT without the edges looking funny (nasty thing about CRT). I have a RP-CRT (HDTV) as well as plasma, and I can only say that your assessment is based on some cheap plasma from one of the asian tigers that was not setup correctly. You need to look at a few more . I know of no one who has ever said that about a good plasma TV. I can only assume you have never seen (a good) one. Keep in mind that Plasma is as close to CRT in terms of black levels that you can get...So if you hate plasma based on black levels alone...son, there is nothing left, and you have no choice but to get a CRT based HD set.

I agree with you about the blacks on a plasma. I think he may have the brightness set to high. He needs a DVD calibration disk like Avia or Digital Video Essentials to set it up right.

no and no
What kind of RP CRT do you have? Magnavox?
Even the top plasma's can't hold a candle to a good quality CRT's blacks...
For the most part people buy ED plasmas's because they can't justify/afford the price of the HD versions, sad but true, even then you have to go to 50" before you get real HD resolution.

Nothing presently available is as good as CRTs when it comes to blacks, but plasmas (especially Panasonics) have very good blacks if setup properly. Everything I have read on plasmas seems to bear this out.
