Horizontal Banding on both Plasma & LCD????

05-02-2009, 10:31 PM
Recently purchased a Sharp LCC6554U LCD and exchanged it for a Samsung 63NB550 Plasma. Both units are/were displaying faint horizontal banding about (5) 3" bars about an 1" apart from each other. Mostly visiable during solids backgrounds(snow, sky, flesh tone). I have tried different power sources, different HDMI cables, through my Onkyo DS-XR806 receiver and without. I have tried component video. The bars are the least visable at 1080P.

This is driving my nuts. I have had 2 different technologies LCD and Plasma displaying the same issue. Must be power, noise, signal strength, interference or ?????

Any ideas or thinking outside the box would be greatly appreciated.

You have the probable causes diagnosed correctly. Most likely interference of some type. Could be anything you mentioned. Try moving the tv to another room, away from all your components, and just plug it in with nothing attached and see if you see the banding. If so, it might be something in the whole electrical system of your house and you'd need an electrician to check it out.

If it's OK in another room with nothing attached, you'll just have to keep plugging and testing till the problem reappears.

I agree with Clearday that it is likely the source or interference that is the cause.

Is it only happening with cable or sat service? Which service do you have? Is it doing it with SD DVD and/or Blu-ray sources also?

If it is only doing it with cable/sat service, then I would think that you need to call that service to fix the issue. If it does it in every room and all sources, then it is likely a electrical issue that needs to be looked at.

Good luck & welcome to the forum! :hithere:

Thanks Clearday and PFC5.

The banding is visable on everything SONY B-ray, XBOX, PS3, Comcast and even on the built in patterns for screen burn of the TV with nothing else connected or even powered on.

I also have in the house 2 SONY LCD Projection SXRD(55&60") and a Toshiba LCD 37AV50U. All in different rooms, all using Comcast HD with no dame issue.

I will be moving the TV to other rooms in the house on Monday evening I don't have an extra body today.

Thanks again.

Then it sounds like an issue with that room which you will confirm once you try it in the other rooms. If it is doing it with that display in the other rooms where the other displays on those rooms do not do it, then it is likely a defective display. But if it does not do it in the other rooms, then it is likely a power issue or a ground loop issue. Try making sure you have ALL connected devices hooked through the same surge protector so they are all on the same ground. If that solves the issue, then it may just be a ground loop issue and an electrician should be called to correct the faulty grounding on one or more of the outlets in that room in question.

Hope this helps!

I tried the tv in 3 different rooms. In every room it had the same issue. First using the wall outlet only, then with 2 different monster power centers.

So I called Samsung and they are sending a tech out in a couple of days. I will see what he has to say, then make a decision.

Might go with a Samsung 55 LED, if things don't work out.

Thanks for all the help.
