Zone 2 speakers won't play (Onkyo 606)

I had people over for a BBQ this weekend so I ran a speaker wire from the zone 2 location on the back of my 606 all the way to the back yard (approx 40'). I only hooked up one speaker for background noise.

I couldn't get the damn thing to work. I know it should be straight forward so I felt pretty stupid. I hooked it up and then hit the "zone 2" button, the green light lit up but nothing happened. Then I hit the "zone 2 level buttons" and the receiver screen said something like "zone 2 not activated". People were over so I gave up and went back to the grill.

Did I miss something? I had an old Onkyo back in the day and that's all I had to do to turn the speakers on. Any info is much appreciated. Thanks! :)

I'm not sure if this is the case with Onkyo, but there are receivers that will not function if only one of the speaker pairs has a speaker connected. Try connecting both zone 2 speakers and see what happens. :)

I had the same problem when I hooked up my Marantz at first.. I discovered by looking through the manual, I had to set my 2 back surrounds (the 2 that would complete a 7.1, i use it as a 5.1) in the setup to OFF in the settings before ZoneB would work by pressing the button ont he receiver.

I see what you mean, the receiver can only power 7 speakers at a time so if I want Z2 to work I need to go down to a 5 channel so that can free up some space for the outdoor speakers. My old Onkyo did that automatically. Oh well.

Thanks for the heads up ECK. I guess I should go digging for my manual.

What was the source of audio you are trying to send to the zone 2 speakers? All AVR's I have set up for zone 2 ONLY pass analog sources to zone 2.

What I had to do was run composite cables from each component to the AVR.

Hope this helps

I actually did get this fixed. I talked to a rep from Onkyo over the phone and they recommended me to "reset" the receiver. Hold down the VCR buttton on the receiver itself for 5 seconds and then press the main power/standby switch and then release both. It will fully reset the receiver so any Audyssey settings will be lost.

The reason the rep gave me was during the QC process the person may not have enabled or disabled the zone 2 capability for some reason. Kinda an oxymoron if you ask me, when your QC process messing something up!

Hopefully this works for you. Report any findings back here!
