It's often not a matter of getting "PBS", but a matter of getting your local PBS network affiliate. If the satellite or cable company and your local network affiliate cooperate (system capacity permitting) you will be able to subscribe to the local network affiliate.

What metropolitan area is your address in? Have you asked your provider which affiliate you should be receiving?

Can you receive any signal from a PBS affiliate with a ground to ground Over The Air (OTA) antenna and a ATSC tuner (in your TV or a DTV converter)?

Whoever told you that you would get PBS in HD was probably referring to the now-defunct PBS HD channel. This was a national channel that started in 2004 and was available on cable and satellite as well as OTA from most PBS affiliates, but it was discontinued at the end of 2008. It demise has left local PBS affiliates with very little HD programming to show on their OTA HD channels.

In the days when there where only 3 Networks-PBS was a Tax payer Funded (and still is) alternative programing-- Which is No longer needed-- Proving once again the more you pay for something the more you get of it.

Directv has *slowly* been adding local PBS affiliates and they are available in 47 DMAs currently. Additional ones supposedly will be added this year. Here is a list of local HD stations carried by Directv: http://members.cox.net/oknewshawk/DTV_HDLIL_CITY.html.

Apparently, that list is out of date. I am in the Spfld/Holyoke, MA area. All of our locals, NBC, ABC, CBS, FOX, and PBS are now available in HD. NBC, ABC, and CBS started last October. PBS and Fox, more recently. The first 3 broadcast local news in HD.
