HD Receiver With SD TiVo

(I stumbled into this site by accident last night and stayed up a few hours reading and learning way past my bedtime. lol Woke up and came right back to do some more reading.)

I just bought a second HDTV yesterday. So I was planning on buying a second HD DirecTV receiver. They seem to start at $300 and go up. I already subscribe to DirecTV's HD package. Should I call DTV before buying a new receiver and try to get some kind of deal before putting out another $300?

I also have a stand alone SD TiVo which is currently connected to my SD DTV box. My current HD DTV box forces me to set it to HD or SD. So if I watch live TV in HD, I have to remember to change it to SD when I'm finished if I want TiVo to record a picture. So that's why I have my TiVo connected to my SD DTV box now. Is there an HD box out there that will send out SD and HD together so that I could connect the SD to my TiVO and HD to my TV and not have to remember to change from HD to SD?

Thanks.

You can get a DirecTV HD Tivo. It will cost you around 500 on ebay, more in stores.

That is the ultimate solution to your problem.

Yeah. In the stores it's $700 and I already have a life-time subscription on my current Tivo that I bought a few months ago. I don't need my Tivo in HD. lol I'm also not interested in paying $700 for another Tivo with life-time.

I may end up paying the $5/mo to keep that SD box active just to run Tivo.

I have a standard Tivo and a Hughes Htl hd receiver hooked to my LCD tv. I have so many different inputs on the back of the tv that I can connect both receivers. It really works out well as I don't have to do anything to keep recording my SD programs. I have one RG-6 cable connected to my tivo and one to the HD box. All I have to do is switch the tv to which ever input I would like to watch, really simple. You should consider buying a receiver off of E-Bay before you consider spending $300 on another HD receiver. I picked up this Hughes HTL HD receiver for $175.00....It's brand new and it's a great receiver...Much better than paying the price these rip off artists want!
Hope this helps !

I ended up picking up DirecTV's H10 HD receiver. The box stated on the outside that it sends SD and HD simultaneously...that sounded like what I wanted.

As for the price, I got it for around $100. 10% off coupon from Best Buy and I called DirecTV and they offered me $150 credit along with $5/mo off on my HD package for 6 months.

So the receiver does what I was looking for. I have Sat in to the receiver, S-Video out to Tivo and component out to TV. Then S-Video from Tivo to TV.

I do now have a minor annoyance when I'm watching live TV. I don't get any warning before Tivo changes my receiver's channel. lol

So I may still end up using that SD receiver just to run my Tivo afterall.
