HD leader my ass

To give this any kind of relevance, you really need to do a like list for all other content providers. That would allow folks to see who has the most HD content for their customers.
You may also want to do some research on "What is Life" as you appear to not have one. Next time you get so bored, do some volunteer work with an organization that does some good in your area. It will really make you feel good and give you an outlet for the pent-up anger you have for D*.

:haha::haha::haha:

I never said anything about anger. I was just pointing out the blatant false advertising on the part of DirecTV. and I think there's always room for improvement.

You want some comparison, how bout this. These channels are all in HD 24 hours a day. So 24 times 365 is 9,760 hours of HD content per year per channel, so times 60 that's 525,600 hours of HD content per year altogether. Whats does DirecTV have to match that? Well nothing but they're like "well we got Sunday Ticket" Ok thats on for 6 hours of games a day for 17 days of the year. So that's 102 hours of mostly meaningless games a year. Oh and you can only watch 1 game at a time unless you have a magnifying glass to watch the mix channel with. Which would the 75 percent of DirecTV customers who don't give a shit about NFLST prefer?

Everyone knows Dish Network, Verizon, A&T, and most cable companies have most of these channels in HD.

I doubt it.
Prove that these other providers have all the HD channels DIRECTV has plus the ones from your DIRECTV doesn't have master list.

TomCat4680

ok glenn i took that part back. read the part i added. its mind blowing how much DirecTV DOESN'T care about nonsports fans.

I think your RANT is totally bogus. On your so-called "missing-in-action" HD list, the only channel I care about is WGN which I would like to see in HD for the Cubs games only.

I'm an HBO subscriber and they provide most of their meaningful shows in on their HD channel. IF you actually subscribe to all the movie services you list, you need to get a life. IMHO, most of Hollywood is the new "great vaste wasteland" although there are some gems from time to time.

I am a recent escapee from Comcast Cable and their bogus HD claims about leading the way ONLY because of their ONDemand crapo movies. After 2 years of no HD playoff baseball on TBS, I pulled that plug.

One day soon, all shows will be in HD, but it takes big money to send up the birds to beam down all that bandwidth.

i dont need to prove anything glenn. the truth is out there, DirecTV is no longer the HD leader except when it comes to sports packages that no one gives a damn about.

also last I checked DirecTV has 15 infomercial channels.

yes I do subscribe to them all. I had a free preview of HBO, Showtime and Starz for 3 months when I signed up back in October then decided to keep them when the offer expired. I added Cinemax later.

HDTV IS life. The rest is just details.

TomCat, since you are obviously very unhappy with D*, why not shut it off, go away and leave us alone....

Your posts are generally some rant about this or that and don't add any helpful content to this board (this rant, the price increase rant, Hot Pass rant, etc)
(How do I qualify this as a rant...3 posts in a row within a few minutes with no other posts in between)

And if you are under a 2 year commitment, we'll take up a collection for the disconnect fee so you can turn it off...... :D

(Edit: I must retract the Hot Pass cite, as you were actually pretty laid back on that thread, my error on that one)

ya, comcast caught up to directv's HD this year in my area. They added a ton of new channels. Problem with comcast is their prices. Thats why i dumped them. I just have their cable modem now.

If it wasn't because cox phoenix is really lagging in hd selection, I too would be b!tching about DirecTV's "HD LEADER" claim. But I have the most hd channels I can get in my area since my other choices are dish and Cox cable. I am though bummed at ESPNU HD and I would like the availability of some more movie channels in hd. I have the premier pkge w/ HD add and hate the fact I have some pointless channels like "american auction network." What garbage tv channels those are and there are quite a few of them.

Wow, what a bunch of flamers (and I don't mean sexual preference). This guy started a thread about HD channels that are available that D* has yet to provide. While I agree his "HD Leader my ass..." comment was unnecessary he has every right to start a thread about this topic. But to discredit his list because you personally don't care about those channels is irrelevant as others may care about those channels. And to those telling him to get a life because he subscribes to all the channels you are being way too judgmental. If you don't like a thread move on.

I didn't even know TV-One had a HD channel. Although the list is long, so is the list for other HD providers. No one can carry all that Directv has plus the channels on that "master" list, at least no one can in 2009.

if this thread is a rant from a Comcast employee? I just counted the HD Comcast offerings and the total is 35 channels.

At the DTV post below, there are 105 HD channels. Granted, DTV is weighted by sports HD programing, but they still have ALL the HD channels I want and then some. IMHO, HD best serves sports and movies. Of course, I have an outside life and don't spend more than 2 hours on average watching all the crap on the 200+ channels that are being beamed around. FYI, crap in HD is still crap. Just better looking.

Also, a lot of the HD programing is just standard video broadcast in HD. Hint, look for the grainy HD video.

a Comcast employee? I've never been so insulted. Try a former Comcast customer.

I agree with yu on the movies part. Too bad half of the channels on my master list are premium movie channels. The only sports I care about are in market football and baseball though so I have no use for Sports Pack, especially in the winter.

The only reason I started this thread is because they claim 130 national HD channels, which is a bold faced lie. 77 are national, and 63 are regional sports networks. They should change all advertisements to reflect this. A national HD channel should be defined as "available 24 hours a day without blackouts to ALL customers natiowide for a single flat fee, without having to purchase an out of market sports package." I don't think anyone could argue with that, and if they could they're obviously a DirecTV employee

stonedog23
03-01-2009, 08:30 AM
To me a regional sports network becomes national if someone like me can view it out of region. And since I have the sports pack, an Arizona sports channel is a national one to me living in North Carolina. You can't make your own definition of what a national channel should be, if the "nation" can watch it, then it's national, whether you have to pay extra for it or not. Are HBO and Cinemax not national networks because you have to pay extra to get them?

TomCat4680
03-01-2009, 08:32 AM
Yes all premium movie channels are national because you pay a flat monthly fee for them with no additional super expensive out of market sports packages fees for the live games (which is the only thing worth watching on REGIONAL sports networks). In other words, they don't have blackouts!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ans2004
03-01-2009, 08:53 AM
directv still has more hd offerings than any other provider. yes other providers are catching up and directv needs to get on the ball and add more hd. this will take time and bandwidth to do. so at this time i would say directv is the hd leader even though i do agree they don't have 130 hd channels. pay per view and game only rsn's shouldn't be included. there are alot of channels on tomcat's list that i would love to see in hd, however i know that my patience will in time reward me with new channels in the future. the year is still young.:D

College sports aren't blacked out and I love college football and basketball. The major league sports are blacked out and that's a bummer, but that is the fault of the professional leagues and not the regional networks. I do have the NBA package though. But the regional networks are national and there are live sports that you can watch on them.

I agree, D* still offers more HD than any other provider, except fios may be... But the point is that it is the hardest and most expensive to the first . It is going to be much easyer and so much cheaper to deploy HD in the future, however it is a very complex and expensive process right now. It is easy to criticize, but in my opinion D* is doing a good job. I can say that I am a satisfied customer, I get everything or almost everything I like in HD, except may be just a few channels.
On the other hand life does not revolve around TV regardless if HDTV or SD. I think, spending your entire free time in front of TV (even if it looks great) is simply pointless.

And who cares of HSN or some infomertial channel in HD. Is this a joke.....Get a life, read a book.:haha:

I'm glad you're happy with your HD offerings, but I'm curious about one thing you wrote here. How, exactly, will it get easier to add HD in the future? Right now DirecTV is largely tapped out in terms of bandwidth. They CAN add a couple more HD channels if pressed, but that's about it. The next set won't come until later this year when they launch their next satellite (D12). Until that happens, though, DirecTV is pretty much at a limit in terms of how many channels they can add. And even with that satellite they may be able to get up to 150 - 175 HD feeds. Other providers are currently working on means to seriously expand bandwidth. Verizon has the bandwidth now to get to 160 - 175 HD channels, and when they go full IP (which is what they're working toward), they'll have unlimited bandwidth. U-Verse (AT&T) is IPTV, and so really has no bandwidth limitation. Many cable providers are going SDV, at least for some of their channels, giving them alot more bandwidth.

And cable/FiOS haven't even touched on going MPEG4 yet. DirecTV's already there with MPEG4. When cable does, they'll be able to up their HD offerings by 50%.

I don't mean to rain on your parade, but DBS has, by far, the biggest long-term bandwidth limitation out of any type of pay TV service.

well,
my point is that it is always more complex and expensive to deploy new technologies now than later. As of right now D* is building and new infrastructure of sats and it takes time. And I am very sure that 10 years from today everything will be in HD, HD will be just a standard ,just like B&W became color half a century ago.

Yeah but not everyone adapts to new technology as fast as some would like, some people had b&w TV's only well into the 1970's. I'm guessing lots of people will keep their SDTV's well into the 2020's and therefore less popular channels will remain SD for at least another 10 years to serve those laggards.

agree with msmith198025,

Hm, i think that the transition to HD is actually going quite fast. Don't expect the change to happen over night. The new infrastructures have to be build and it's an extensive process. Don't forget about the networks, they have to upgrade as well.

because of the laggards who refuse to subscribe to digital cable or DBS and are perfectly happy watching analog SDTV.

Things can still be converted/downconverted. Digital to analog, HD to SD. People keeping SD sets will have little impact on channels swapping to HD down the road.

Directv won't add all those HD channels since it costs them money. Plus they don't have enough room for the bandwidth it would take to have to add those HD channel's. Thats it in a nut shell.

lack of money - bullshit! what are about the record subscriber gains in Q4 2008? why not spend the money they're making on selling infomercial space for new premiums?

bandwidth - bullshit! others have stated there's room for 15 more HD channels.

What does that have to do with DirecTV?, mckenna. That post belongs on the cable board, specifically the time warner one if there is one.

I hate cable because of how systems are regionally managed instead of nationally like satellite. This is why I got DirecTV, all customers get the same national channels at the same time wherever they are and theyre all in the same spot on the lineup nationwide. (for example, CNN is on channel 202 in Michigan and California and the rest of the country, HLN is on channel 204 in Florida, Hawaii and the rest of the country). And if they get a new channel, everyone nationwide gets it at the exact same time and on the exact same package, not just slowly on a market by market basis with different packages for said channel in different markets . I wouldn't go back to cable if my life depended on it.

"What does that have to do with DirecTV?, mckenna. That post belongs on the cable board, specifically the time warner one if there is one."

to answer your question, this quote is the reason i posted the nyc lineup

To give this any kind of relevance, you really need to do a like list for all other content providers. That would allow folks to see who has the most HD content for their customers.
You may also want to do some research on "What is Life" as you appear to not have one. Next time you get so bored, do some volunteer work with an organization that does some good in your area. It will really make you feel good and give you an outlet for the pent-up anger you have for D*.

yes well cable channel lineups and availability vary from system to system and region to region so listing Time Warner in NYC is irrelevant to me here in MI. we don't even have Time Warner in MI that I know of. and I'm not moving to NYC so I can get TW.

For a better, more relevant comparison when it comes to providers who have a universal lineup nationwide have a look at

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_DISH_Network_Channels

and if they ever get here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Verizon_FiOS_channels

and

Sounds like a mute point even continuing this Thread....but I see the initial intention was to list all the HD channels DIRECTV broadcasts nationwide, if there were any missing channels on the list, TC asked anyone to add to his list.

And the way I see it, forum members that posted responses changed the subject completely and it became an argument...

that's all I have to put into the two cents worth category....

I never said anything about anger. I was just pointing out the blatant false advertising on the part of DirecTV. and I think there's always room for improvement.

How is it false advertising? HD leader does not mean that they have ALL of the HD, it means they have the MOST. Last I checked, they do. Of course, FiOS in some areas has more, but it would be a stretch to call them the leader since they have fewer subs, is not available in MOST of the country and some regions that do have FiOS still don't have more than Direct. Of course I can make a list of 50+ HD stations that FiOS doesn't carry either.

lack of money - bullshit! what are about the record subscriber gains in Q4 2008? why not spend the money they're making on selling infomercial space for new premiums?

bandwidth - bullshit! others have stated there's room for 15 more HD channels.

Which means they are probably doing something right??? And 15 more HD channels will still mean they are missing 40+ from your list. Yes, it will cost them money, which will be passed on to the subs, to add more channels.

yeah spending 4 billion on NFLST, a package that's only on for 6 hours a day, 17 days a year, instead of premiums which are on 24/7/365. WTF? Why can't they be the HD movie leader too? SERIOUSLY I REALLY WANT TO KNOW! AND PAY PER VIEW DOES NOT COUNT!

That is one nice thing about having several providers whom all have some unique qualities that separate them from their competition. If one wants a lot of movies in HD, then Dish or another provider may be better. If one wants a lot of sports in HD, then Direct may be better. It would be nice to have it all. That is usually not the case in all aspect of life.

I am very happy with DTV with the exception of the odd storm (about 4-5 nights a year) wrecking havoc with reception here in the NorthEast. As King Henry 8th reportedly said of Sir Thomas More, "Who will rid me of this meddlesome priest?", I say "Who will rid me of this garbage thread?"

Now it's become a "Sticky" that I have to see listed at the top of a website that otherwise contains a lot of wisdom about DirecTV's satellite operation. PLEASE MAKE THIS THREAD TO AWAY. As long as this thread exists, it makes TomCat think he has a Ph. D in satellite programming decisions.

Maybe the only answer for realistic readers here is to get together and sign TomCat up for DishNet so he can take his rants elsewhere.

The show is supposed to be back later this year. I believe they are shooting it now. I've watched every episode and find it a tad boring since they've "done" just about anything you can imagine. Still, I'll watch it when it returns.

See...

http://www.buddytv.com/articles/curb-your-enthusiasm/curb-your-enthusiasm-returning-21179.aspx

Today I read that every show so far has ben shot WITHOUT a script! Everyone is "winging" it. While I don't know what DTV is planning, the past few years I've watched the show in HD with Comcast. HBO "spreads" their stuff around to their different channels so one would expect it to be shown at least once a week in HD and certainly on the first viewing.

HD leader my ass

I have time Warner cable NYc and they have all those movie channels in HD. I'm thinking off getting Direct Tv for my room, they do offer more on the sports area. TWC MLB Extra Innings has only up 10 hd games a week. DTV has about 40 a week.

I wish DirecTV had more movies, or I could afford and have the chance to have both FiOS (for the movies) and DirecTV (for the sports) . If only FiOS would ever get here...

If the avatar is the same as when you first posted, the game was "Duck Tales" on NES.

Anyway, not sure if these were mentioned, but conspicuous by its absence, at least here in San Diego, is MyNetworkTV HD. Really frustrating, because I only really watch a select few shows:

Pitchmen/MythBusters/Dirty Jobs/Life After People (Discovery HD)
Law & Order (TNT HD)
RAW (USA HD)
ECW (Sci Fi HD)
ROH (HDNet)
TNA (SpikeTV HD)
Smackdown (MyNetworkTV)

As you can tell, Smackdown is the only show where I'm forced to watch it in SD. Everything else is HD. It's infurating because DirecTV keeps listing MyNetworkTV HD as a channel, but it seems like nobody can get it.

I get MyNetwork 13 in HD here in Los Angeles. I'm just pissed Superstars HD comes in SD.

I have time Warner cable NYc and they have all those movie channels in HD. I'm thinking off getting Direct Tv for my room, they do offer more on the sports area. TWC MLB Extra Innings has only up 10 hd games a week. DTV has about 40 a week.

Don't know if these are on the list (not about to read through 8 pages of stuff), but here are a few:

* The Travel Channel HD
* MSNBC HD
* BBC America HD (evidently, Direct will not carry it on July 20, when it comes live, with Torchwood's week-long miniseries)
* Local PBS (more the fault of the local channel; however, I've asked if they could pipe these through via the national PBS HD channel and was refused politely)
* Many major network's local digital sub-channels (not technically HD, but the quality is very close)

If these are not included when my contract is up in December, it's Dish Network for me. Don'tcha love competition?

Very true. It literally costs Dtv BILLIONS of dollars to send up new satellites. They don't have the capacity to just add every HD channel available right away. It takes time. The more customers they get will result in more money to send up more satellites. Then that will also result in more HD channels in the future.

I rarely watch a show unless its in HD. Everything new should be in HD, so why aren't shows like The Apprentice and The Bachelor shown in HD?

Also, Seinfeld and Everybody Loves Raymond have been remastered to HD (not stretched to fit HD screen). They should do this with other top syndicated shows like Friends and The King of Queens.

Um no, when something is shot with standard definition equipment and made into HD later, that's called upconverting. NONE of the shows you mentioned were shot in HD, they were made before HD existed. Read this for more info:

You are not considering the fact that some sitcoms were shot on film. HD resolution can be extracted from 35mm film. While cropping is still necessary (since it was shot for 4:3) that doesn't mean that the original film cannot be remastered for HD resolution. It's obviously a time consuming/costly process that I've only seen on Seinfeld so far.

Consider the fact that George Lucas needs to go back to the archives to get the original/remastered film every time a newer/upgraded resolution becomes available (he went to the original film rather than Upconverting VHS to DVD or DVD to HD). He obviously didn't shoot on "HD" equipment back in the 70s; it just so happens TVs have been far behind the camera equipment on the technology curve and are just now starting to catch up.

Transferring film to digital format has nothing to do with up-conversion. As someone already made a point, term up-conversion should be used in terms of digital formats. Most of Hollywood movies made these days are still shot using film and later transferred to digital. Film content from decades ago can be processed the same way.

Why the hating on DirecTV?

Yeah they don't got a lot of HD channels the some others offer, but they also got channels that others don't have as well. If your making a list of HD channels and which providers carry them, you will most likely see most of the big name companies not carrying 40-60 different channels.

Just seems a little misleading. As if there is another provider who offers every single one of these channels + the ones DirecTV does offer. Its really a combination of HD channels offered by several different providers, compared against a single one.

Also keep in mind that some HD channels, and channels all together had been bought by providers so they can be the only one to provide that channel in HD.

TWC in the Cleveland market is only lacking 4 HD channels that Dtv carries: Fuel, The 101, NFL, and HD Net. On the other hand TWC, though not carrying ALL the HD feeds in this master list, is still carrying some quite popular and highly demanded channels: MSNBC, AMC, Travel, Vesus, IFC, G4).

I was just out shopping and approached at I think Sam's club by a salesman from DirectTV which I cancelled well over a year ago. Trying to convince me to switch to them. I told him the reason I quit is I'm a CU fan and only have either cable or satellite for college football and basketball and they do not have the Pac12 which I need. This idiot keeps yapping on how much better off I would be with DirecTV ignoring the fact they do not have what I want. He must have been desperate for a sale and awfully stupid to even keep yapping when I told him explicitly why I didn't want it.

I just moved to Arizona and went with Cox only because I have the equipment (an HDHomeRun for computers) which only works with cable. It was excellent with Comcast with whom I had all the channels I wanted at a very good price including my internet. Down here I went with Qwest since Cox wasn't even in the home I got and I didn't want to wait for my internet plus the fact they offered a much better deal. Cox sucks as bad as anyone I have every had TV or even internet service with. They do not offer decent channels at reasonable prices nor a reasonable internet price. They also make you use some piece of junk to connect to the HDHomeRun and they limit your recordings to only one computer to either store or watch which is nothing Comcast ever did. I noticed here in Sun City I have seen few if any that are with them. Too bad they don't go under and some decent company can take over.

That's why we need more options. Some people are in areas where they can't use Satellite or even cable in some places. While the DTV is fine for you, it's useless for me and for NFL I only watch Packers games and they are normally on a lot all over the country. Too bad none of the providers offer just a sports only package since everything else they have is mostly crap anyway. They are discontinuing most of the good shows they had.

The only thing I ever liked DTV for was I could change my address and watch all the Giants games in the summer. With Cox I just discontinue it during the spring and summer just need it for college football and basketball. I have an antenna and 4 computer tuners for all the local things.

Prove that these other providers have all the HD channels DIRECTV has plus the ones from your DIRECTV doesn't have master list.

thats direct's biggest problem, lying. i remember when they use to say they had more hd channels than dish, yet dish had TMC, AMC, DIY, BBC and others that direct didnt have. maybe direct was counting the 50 Rugby channels they have in HD. well they have them now. but stop with the lying. Hey we paid some of our customers to switch to dish just to prove how bad they are. if your the best then you dont have to constantly bad mouth the competitors. save your badmouth adds to give that money to your customers in the form of lower prices. thats how to increase customers. as for the customers they paid to switch, well i recognize the gal form a few tv show. that doesnt mean that she cant be a direct customer. but i doubt it.

Tomcat - I think your rant is right on the money.
It appears that in many markets DirecTV does not carry an HD feed of PBS. For example, here on the central coast of California, all my "locals" are in HD, except PBS on 65, which appears to be a generic SD feed.
For me DirecTV is the HD leader in channels I could care less about.

all i remember is direct saying they had more HD channels than dish, funny because when i switched they didnt have AMC, TMC, DIY and quite a few more that wernt HD, i guess they meant they had more sports HD channels, you know, they ones nobody watches. ofcourse they have them now. i just feel that when a company makes all these false statements it just shows how hard up they are. my contract will be up soon so im thinking about switching back to dish. curious to see if dish is doing aall the advertising on the menu for movies and whatever else they think they can sell you. plus im still getting emails about my comp movie, you know = heres your complimentary movie, yeah right, as soon as you pay them.

Sports are a multi billion dollar entity in our culture, so someone obviously cared about the HD sports channels. I know I did, especially since HD was built on sports not cable channels like the aforementioned DIY or AMC. No one company is going to have every single channel that you hold dear within your heart.

Hey, help me out. I'm trying to understand this thread. Direct TV charges me 10.00 a month for HD service, another 10.00 a month to record the HD channels, 3.00 a month to share them on all the TVs, 5.00 a month for an extra 5 HD channels, and you are saying that they are not really HD? $30 a month or $360. a year. HUH?

This thread was started in 2009 when DIRECTV had quite a few channels that were not yet being broadcast in HD over their system.

Over the years D has added HD channels so you are in fact receiving the majority of channel in HD. Obviously there are some channels that are still in SD. It always possible one of those maybe a favorite of yours. If so contact D and ask/urge them to broadcast in HD. In my case all the channels my wife and I are interested in are in HD.

The new AT&T-DIRECTV company would be in a position to dominate the pay TV and Broadband categories.

i dont need to prove anything glenn. the truth is out there, DirecTV is no longer the HD leader except when it comes to sports packages that no one gives a damn about.

also last I checked DirecTV has 15 infomercial channels.

Infomercial channels..........why was I forced to pay for that garbage whe they counted them as viewing entertainment?:spam:

Well, guys, we will never get a good, reasonable choice with any of the satellite or cable networks. I will preface by saying the only reason I use any of them is because I'm a college football fan. I didn't like Direct when I was with them and left when they didn't get the Pac-12. Also, Direct is not good to deal with and not really that friendly and very costly. I had Dish and the way they have their recording set up as well as a number of other factors with their design they just got so irritating I had to get rid of them. Cox is expensive and the biggest liars you will ever have to deal with. So, I'll just stick with my antenna (which I use even if I have cable or satellite. Today there are 7 good games on the national networks so I'm really not missing much except my favorite teams rarely make the big show. By the way, my comments are honest and not based on affordability as I can pay for any of them with no problem. Just have my method of making choices based on value and none of them earn it.

A few years ago we were visiting a couple in FL (older guy 70+) who have a new HD TV. The first day there, I didn't say anything when his set looked strictly SD. The 2nd day I couldn't take it any longer so I asked him if I could look at his setup. The set was fed by a coax cable even though there was an HDMI output on his set receiver.

I hooked one up and suddenly we were in the latest decade! I've wondered how many other TV viewers are doing the same thing.

Personally, I think this whole thread should be garbage canned as most of the info is OUT OF DATE. How about starting a new one about "missing HD channels" on the various services. Or at least, take the "sticky" off of it so that it can die a natural death as it slides off the bottom of the first page of this blog.
