i have a question-when i play a blu ray movie on my pioneer blu ray player on my pioneer 60" kuro plasma, there is almost always a border above and below the picture (except on dark night, where some of the shots are full screen). i called them at best buy, and they told me that is normal, as it is a wide screen movie. the margin is only a few inches on top and on bottom. do you guys agree that it is normal? thanx

Your screen is 16:9 and very few movies are shot anywhere near that ratio, so yes it is normal. The shots that come full screen on TDK were shot on imax cameras and have the proper aspect ratio...

Sounds like letterbox to me. So is it normal, yes.

I know of a couple of BD movies that fill up the whole screen, Forgetting Sarah Marshal, and Night at the Museum. The PQ on FSM isn't great all the time but NATM looks really good. Just letting you know if you want something full screen.

For those who prefer to not have bars but who do NOT want to degrade the picture by zooming, they should look for movies with a 1.85:1 or 1.78:1 aspect ratio as listed on the back of the case to that movie.

As a guess I would say about 60% of films now are in the 2.40:1 aspect ratio and this is much more for the action titles and the 1.85:1 ratio is more for comedies, etc. as a general rule.

thank you all again-it would be nice if all of the movies filled up all the screen

Yea, I can agree with you on that as I would like to use all the real estate I bought. But I also don't want to stretch the film and chop off some of the picture. I have gotten use to letterbox and it really doesn't bother me now.
