Toshiba Regza Contrast Ratio?

Hi there. I'm considering the Toshiba 42XV545U as a second television, however Toshiba's posted contrast ratio concerns me (15,000 dynamic, 1200-1 true). I realize contrast ratios can be misleading, and there is no 'standard' out there, however Toshiba's ratio is less than half the competing televisions (Samsung, Sony, etc), they post up tp 30,000 and 2500 or 2000-1 true.

I've compared the set in a couple of stores, and it seems a tad less vibrant than a Sony or even LG.

Is there a reason Toshiba's numbers are so low? I've read a lot of positive reviews on the Regza on this and other sites, but I've also heard they are more of an 'entry level' set for LCD.

Does this tv compare to the contenders like Sony KDL40WL140 or the Sharp LC42D85? Thanks for reading.

The Regza is comparable to the other sets you mentioned and they use much more conservative contrast ratio specs. Truly all flat panel displays have a real contrast ratio of between 350:1 to 600:1. Trying to compare uncalibrated TV's in a store is like trying to decide which detuned high performance car would be better.

I did read through this thread, but I'm still uncertain about the Regza. I have a 26" inch Toshiba 720 p I bought last year for the bedroom and while it is a great little tv, I don't know that I want to invest in its 120 hz bigger brother just yet. Viewing in a store is misleading also, so I am interested in general consensus on this set. Thanks for reading...

The best bet is to try to find pro reviews where they realistically measure the contrast ratio compared to other displays that they also measured.
