Some people will say - The cable companies compress the hell out of the HD !!
Some people will say the same about DIRECTV.

I've got DIRECTV. I think the HD looks great.

The thing is with Directv, as long as your dish is aligned correctly you will get the same PQ no matter where in the US you live. The PQ with cable companies varies greatly dependent on your location. My parents and myself both have Comcast. We live about 35 miles apart and my PQ is noticably better than theirs.

I get fair PQ on Time Warner here in the Rio Grande Valley [Brownsville/SPI]. The biggest problem here on SPI is pixelation and drop out issues. Its possible TW is working on SDV which may be causing some problems but I really have no way of knowing for sure.

We also only have 14 HD channels available here on TW. Pretty bad considering we get 53 channels available at home on Cox with more coming.

I think I can give a fairly honest opinion on which has a better picture since i have worked for some cable companies in the past as well as directv and Dish recently.

For a while cable (Comcast in my area) looked very good but then they started adding more HD channels and at some point they started compressing a ton. Recently a Comcast rep was asked why the sudden compression and all that could be said was, they had to bend at some point because their system could not handle the bandwidth. This is why comcast is having so many issues in my area right now.

For about 1 year I was a directv subscriber (until last November) and could not believe the disparity between Comcast and Directv. If Directv didn't have so many issues with their DVR's i would still be a happy customer. I can honestly say Directv's average picture is about Comcasts best picture.

Anyone that doesn't need a DVR or is willing to take a chance on their directv's dvr's then D* has the best picture, easily.

This is so true and it's only gotten worse since Comcast was forced to start compressing. I live fairly close to the local comcast office, I'm talking where the Sats and are not just a little office, and i'm getting a perfect singal plus useing a singal meter i'm getting an over amped singal at times. Even with all that in my favor Comcasts best picture is about directv's average picture.

The best thing someone can do is call comcast and complain about the picture quality. alot of times all that needs to be changed is the drop, that's the line going from the pole to the home. other times it could be the whole street that needs the cable changed out. Comcast will not even look into it until they get enough complaints.

If all checks out at the first split then the tech will check the main viewing room to see if the box or line going to that room might need replacing, like i just had done the other week.

next PQ issues could be caused by the box itself. After we changed the lines going to my main room I noticed no difference so we changed out the box. Instantly everyone in the room thought Discovery looked a whole lot better, my usual test channel. See the way the new cable boxes are made is with a cable card built into them which has caused so many issues with PQ and physical quality.

So if you are having PQ issues then call comast and demand a free check otherwise threaten you are going to directv. That's what i did and now i have Free HBO, Max, Starz, and HD DVR for a year and a commitment on file saying I can recieve this promo again come next November, yes i double checked and it is on file with a case number.

What were these "so many issues with their DVR's" you had ?

I've had an DIRECTV HD DVR for over 2 years now without any issues.
