Hi everyone i have a HR20 from 2006, and today i turn on the tv and it looks like a computer starting up on MS-Dos saying that is been a problem with the hard drive, and the box is trying to fix the problem, but i would like to know if in case, that i have to replace the hard drive is broken and i need to replace it for a new one, what i need to do?

1.- With a new hard drive means that i need to call directv to activate that box again? or it will be active until a new hard drive is in place?

2.- Can i do it by my self?

3.- this drive that the dvr is trying to fix, lost all the recordings?

4.- i just trying to avoid the directv service call cause i hate to order either a new box or try to go the trouble shooting with this people thank again to everyone.

Your Box is Leased, Open it and you have bought it. CALL THE MAN, they will send you a replacement for shipping cost and box the broken one and ship it back. $20.00

If your drive is damaged all is lost if it won't boot.

CALL'EM your wasting a lot of TV watching by waiting.

If you have the protection plan they will waive the $20 shipping fee:D

You don't have to CALL THE MAN, not right away.
Try connecting an eSATA drive and everything will probably be just fine again.

Unplug the DVR power, connect up eSATA drive, power up eSATA drive, plug DVR power cord back in.

According to WestDC - Your Box is Leased, Open it and you have bought it.

What a joke.
As if next time you connect it a message will be send directly to DIRECTV - This box has been opened !!!!

You can put the original hard drive back in, put the cover back on, put the screws back, and they'll never know the difference.
