setting up a volume control knob...

01-12-2009, 08:28 AM
i am helping a friend wire a volume control knob.

the problem for me is that i have never done it before.

without knowing much about the control knob, i have a question about setting it up, since we are going to run the wire as well.

do i need to run my speaker wires TO the location of the control knob and then run another set of speaker wires from the control knob TO the receiver?

if this ends up being harder than i thought we will get someone who knows more about it to set it up.

i do other low voltage stuff, phones, internet/cable so i figured i could tackle this, but maybe not.

Yes you run speaker wires from the receiver to the volume control and then out of the volume control to the speaker.

This can cause problems though you should be aware of. Volume controls wall mounted are designed to be used with constant output amplifiers where you set a volume out of the amplifier and never change it. If your friend is using the volume control in addition to the volume control on the receiver, they can end up fighting each other. Turning the receiver volume up too far with the remote volume control turned down can cause the amplifiers in the receiver to overload.
