I currently have the 811 model and I am considering an upgrade to the 942. Could someone please explain to me what MPEG-4 will do for me? I know that I will not get it with this 942 but I would still like to understand it. Thanks..

MPEG4 is another data compressor, similar but more advanced than MPEG2 which is currently in use. It's about twice as efficient.

It's possible that mpeg4 may produce less blockly picture during high motion scenes compared to mpeg2. Other than that it should produce the same quality as mpeg2 in half the bandwidth. Satellite companies want to use this compression sceme to double the channel capability, particularly HD which uses 6 times the bandwidth of SD. A new decoder chip is needed hense new receivers.

Also DVD and Digital broadcast use MPEG2. They probably won't ever change else new players and digital tuners would be needed.
The next generation of DVD-HD or Blu-Ray might use MPEG4 or H.264 method of encoding (but we'll have to wait and see). These are blue laser disc and not to be confused with today's DVD players.
