Component connection w/o HD channels?

I just got a LG 52" DLP (RU-52SZ61D), and have Directtv. I don't want to pay an extra $10/mo for one channel that I'll watch (ESPN HD). However, does the Directtv HD receiver (cuz it has component video connections) offer better picture quality than my regular box using s-video? My receiver also has the Tivo integrated, so even if I did order the HD receiver, how would I Tivo regular/SD channels still? (I'm not dropping $700 for HD Tivo).

Does anybody know if Directtv will even give you a new box just so to connect with component cables and not have the HD channels? or would that not even make a difference in quality??

I've searched in the forum, and haven't found any threads about this, but maybe I missed it. Thanks for the help... I don't trust directtv customer service to give me an honest answer.

Without HD channels, the component connection won't really make a difference for the SD programs.
