Panasonic 50PZ80U vs 50PZ800U - Advice Please

New member to the Forum. Thanks in advance for your help.

I've been researching flat panels for the past 2-3 weeks online and in-store. Our living room is not huge, but we sit between 7.5' and 12' from the TV, and we get a slightly above average amount of natural light through the windows. So I've concluded that plasma is the way to go for my situation, and that Panasonic makes the best plasmas for the money. My wife was adamant about getting a 46" flat panel at the largest, but I recently "convinced" her that a 50" is the way to go (essentially I put my foot down because electronics are really the only items I get to choose in the house).

I've decided between the Panasonic 50PZ80U and the 50PZ800U. From everything I've seen in the store and online, the 800U is a superior picture. I think the colors are more accurate, especially with the THX certification. Even before I read about the 80U's red push, I noticed it at Best Buy. So it's definitely a valid argument. But I do think that I would be very happy with the 80U.

So I guess my question is this: Is the 800U really worth the extra $600-$800 over the 80U? Can anyone let me know why they chose (or would choose) one over the other? I understand there is other accessory equipment to be purchased along with the TV, so I'm trying to save some cash if possible. Money is not the deciding factor, though it's always nice to keep some cash in your wallet. But I really do think the 800U is the best picture in plasma other than the Pioneer KURO line.

I got completely rid of the red push by using the Tint setting of +5 on my 50pz80u and using the Warm Temp setting. I get near perfect color settings looking with the 3 color gels that come with the DVE calibration disc. This got the best settings I have ever seen with ANY display I have had of 5 HDTVs.

No question the 800u is a better display. It is just a question if it is worth more money to YOU! ;)

I guess that would have been my next question. Can you eliminate the red push from the PZ80U? It seems as though you can, but does that affect other colors, etc.?

Not with my settings. I got them all looking fantastic!

My main concerns with the 80U were with the amount of adjustments available to the user. From what I've read, Panasonic doesn't give you much in these models. The 800U gets around that by having the THX basically perfectly for you. Do you find that there aren't enough adjustments on your 80U? Did you choose the 80U over the 800U based on the drastic price difference? I don't know much about the DVE calibration disc, but is it something I can purchase and calibrate my TV with myself?

The price left the 800u out of contention for me, as I didn't "need" a new display and bought the 50pz80u for $1300.00 back in May for $1,000.00 off of MSRP then which was basically unheard of then compared to now. The price was just too good for me to pass up on it. then.

As I said, I got my colors pretty close to perfect with my settings by using the BD version of DVE. You can get it here:

http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_gw?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=DVE&x=0&y=0

Pick your version for the format you have.

I was able to get the colors correct with the settings available and have provided them to people here to get them close, but the DVE disc can put the finishing touches on it.
