Dish DVR 942 or Wait?

I'm looking for a little advice and direction. I'm a Dish subscriber and have the complete hdtv network package. Currently have 3 tv's. One hdtv w/the Dish 811 receiver and 2 sdtv's connected to the Dish 522 dual receiver. I recently purchased another hdtv to replace one of the sdtv's and I need to purchase an hdtv tuner. As a result, I'm considering buying the Dish DVR 942 receiver. However, reading the forum I've gotten mixed reviews on the 942 particularly regarding the bugs and possible software upgrades. Also, I contacted Dish regarding if or when the 942 will become available for existing customers but they were no help. Below are my questions:

1. Based on the above comments, should I buying the 942 or wait?

2. If I should wait, what hdtv receiver is recommended that is Dish
Network compatible (DVR is not necessary under my current set-up)?

3. If I buy the 942 to connect w/the new hdtv, can I simply swap the 522 w/the 942 or is installation more complicated than this?

4. Regarding Dish, I have the one HD package and I'm not interested in buying a second one. I will be very happy with OTA. However, I'm assuming that if I buy the 942, I will need to contact Dish to activate the receiver but if I'm just swapping receivers and not interested in another HD package, this may not be necessary.

Thanks!

I would wait out the year for Mpeg4 upgrades before buying a 942, just my opinion. (rumors are that HD subs will get mpeg4 receivers first????)

There is only one HD charge from Dish, even with two HD receivers.

I am new to HDTV. I am a current Dish customer with two receivers, 4 TVs (one is DVR). I purchased a new HDTV to replace an existing TV. The question is what Dish HD reciever. I really like the DVR that is hooked to 2 TVs. That gives us options watching multiple shows in two places. There is a rumor of a new HD reciever from Dish. Any news? Ideas? Thanks.

Well, the new 942 DVR HD receiver is two tuners(2 Tv's like 522).
You can start to enjoy it with $250 on front even the MPEG-4 is around in the corner but you won't be able to swap the receiver to get MPEG-4 probably 2 years later. Just remember, new customers will get first the new recs with MPEG-4 before the current ones. :hithere:

Thanks for the info. Is the MPEG-4 receiver 2 years away? If so, I may go for the 942. You mentioned $250 up front. The dealers arew quoting full price.

I tried to upgrade to the 942 or 941, I am not good at remembering digits apparently, but they were all on backorder. I just had dish installed less than a month ago and they said it would be a few mos before they are in stock and it would be a 250 upgrade charge. I was told to buy it through the installer, who also said they cannot get them right now. Maybe it's changed in the last few weeks.

1. It may be wise to wait until either the mpeg4 are released or news about the upgrade is revielled. However if $700 is chump change to you then go for it.

2. Presently there's no info about the next generation of receivers.

3. Yes you can swap the 522 of the 942. The 942 should be installed nest to one of your HD TVs and have the 2nd output go to a SD set.

4. You will need to deactivate you 522 then activate the 942 this would be at no additional cost. Also you will get all the HD programming that your 811 has on your 942 as well.
