Being a long time subscriber to Dish, I would like anyone who has the new package to give a opinion as to wether it is worth the $100 install and $5.00 month extra. I currently have the Std. HD package. Also, I called Dish and asked them about self-install. I was told I could install myself but it would still be a $100 charge.

If you already have second dish for the 61.5 bird, you wouldn't have to pay the $100. But I have to say yes its worth it, Although Right now I only watch 3 or 4 of the Voom channels, there will be others added, as I have said on other posts, Rave HD and Monsters HD are awesome, Guy TVG is cool too, when they add the others the charge will really be worth it, Equator HD is like discovery HD and Travel Channel combined. There will always be something worth watching at any given moment on the Voom HD channels, go for it. you will be glad you did! I am! ;)

 How in the world can they say that they are still going to charge you $100.00 if you are going to do the install yourself? I am actually planning on doing the same thing, as I have a dish from my old apartment. I got the specs on how to do it, have the SW21 switch and am ready to go. I plan on getting the 61.5 bird signal, making the call and saying I want the new Voom channels turned on. If I'm told it's $100.00, I will go postal!

I was told by customer service rep, that it was $100 if I did a self install or if I had it installed by Dish. He could not give me a good reason why I had to pay if I did my own install, but said thats the way it was?? I did my own install back in '94 or '95. At that time I had to purchase the two recievers, but the Dish was free. The reason I did my own install was because I wanted to run the cables where I wanted them, and not have them done the easiest way for the installer. I had seen some bad looking installs before I went with Dish eg. cables drooped over roofs etc. I will call again and ask for a (stupidvisor) ooops, supervisor and see if I can cut a deal for the self install. In the past they have been good to me when you pressure them, especially when you are a long time subscriber....

There's no easier way to say this: That CSR is full of crap. When I called DISH I told them I had the 61.5 dish already installed. They never asked if it was professionally done or if it was self-installed. So I don't see how you can call them, say "I already have the 61.5 dish installed" and they would say "OK, that will be $100 please". Just call them and tell them you already have the 61.5 dish installed and they should ("should" being the operative word) turn on the VOOM channels with no problems.

That CSR sounds like he's from another planet. And seeing how DISH is now farming out some of their customer service to India, I wouldn't be surprised to find out that he WAS from another planet, quite frankly. Venusian, maybe? :D

BTW, he didn't have an Indian accent, did he?

My question is this, I was told today by the person installing Dish tomorrow at my house that it's not worth it because in a few mos the Voom lineup will be transferred to the regular Dish satellite and the extra dish will not be necessary at that time. Whadya think? He wants to charge me 200 for it if I still want it.

As for the $100 it all depends on what is needed to complete the install for example I needed a DPP44, DP LNB and DP separator which would cost me nearly $300 if I bought them new and did the install myself. So in my case I saved a bundle. If all you need is a 18 inch with SW21 (or DP21 whatever your case might be) then doing it yourself might save you money. You shouldn't get hit for $100 install if you do it yourself just the cost of the parts.

As for the channels themselves you're getting 10 more HD at 50 cents per channel. Also you'll get the Demo-HD channels (9443) for free. An additional PPV (international), channel 580 and a few more public interest channels (example Penegon 9405) into your lineup.

PS: At the end of this year they're adding 11 more Voom channels but I'm not sure if these will be MPEG4 and/or at additional cost.

I don't believe they have the room to move all the HD channels to 110 or 119. And 61.5 has plenty room since the Rainbow satellite was added. We would know many months ahead of time if any new satellites are being launched. Maybe in the distant future but it still doesn't hurt to have 61.5 added to your collection.

.

Why bother scrounging up parts? To save a few bucks? For 100 bucks you can have it sooner and let someone else provide parts and do all the work.
At least that was true in my case.
$100 included replacing the LNBs for my 110/119 Dish 500, and existing legacy switches with all DishPro hardware as well as doing the extra 61.5 dish. In a hour I had ALL my HD channels.
Granted, service can vary. Fortunately, the techs in our locale are top notch.
