Replicating PS2's success "not fun" for Hirai...

The head of Sony's PlayStation business, Ken Harai, has confirmed his ambitions for the PlayStation 3 to perform better the PS2, which sold over 140 million units.

Speaking with the Financial Times, Harai highlighted the importance of accelerating the sales of the PS3 after an infamously slow start.

"It's not fun for me replicating the PS2 numbers. I've seen that movie already," admitted the executive in a frank interview.

"I want to try to see if we can exceed the PS2 numbers after nine years, otherwise why are we in this business?"

The FT points out that some 20 months after launch, Sony is but 10 per cent towards that target. With 12.85 million sales of the console in Sony's previous fiscal year, and an expected 10 million units set to sale in this fiscal, Harai has his work cut out to reach his goal in the PS3's lifetime, which will be around nine years if it apes the lifespan of the PS2, which still sees regular game releases.

Wow. This is a fine piece of journalism.

The guy didn't even get their names right. Crazy Ken was Ken Kuturagi. Who actually is no longer employed in an executive role at Sony IIRC. The "Hirai" that they're referring to is Kaz Hirai. Not Ken Hirai. Unless there's been some genetic combining of the two, which since it is Sony after all, wouldn't surprise me.

Heh...I thought something about the article did not sound right  Kaz in the past has been one of the more rational sony execs but he must have been around the dearly departed ken to say something like this...

Why couldn't it be possible? I remember people like you saying the same thing about the PS1 & PS2. I guess the numbers of those 2 consoles speak for themselves. And like they say "the rest is history". Remember this is a marathon, not a sprint.

I don't think that's far fetched one bit. Sony is a household name for consumer electronics.

People are still buying PS2 in droves. The PS3 will still be selling midway through the PS4/Xbox720 life cycle due to the BD playback and the media center capabilities.

Not to mention that Japan and middle America are in love with the Sony brand name.

Slow dough is better than no dough.

Could happen.

The PS2 sold over 20 million with the $300 price tag. The PS3 is selling around 14 million with a $400-500 price. Imagine the numbers when they get to $199.

its possible that the PS3 might sell 140mill.. look at the PS1 and PS2..they kept selling well after the nex-gen console came out.. i can see the PS3 continuing to sell even after the PS4 comes out.. .

can the PS3 hit 140mill? sure can.. ... will it do it in less then 5yrs? hell fucking no .. LoL.. more like 8+yrs..

I just don't see it happening. the gaming industry is stacked right now so sony has to contend with way to much for those kind of numbers. it's going to take one hell of a life span and then hope the next gen doesn't blow this gen away to fast.

but hey crazier things have happened before so who knows. it's one of those question that we can debate until everyone hates eachother a whole lot more or we can put it to rest and see what happens later.

my main question is what's going to happen when all those kids who own Wii's decide to step up to a ps3 or 360. i wonder which console these kids are going to flock to because that will be a major factor in this war during the later years.

it would be wise for either of these companies to sign on some of the major games found on the Wii or at least provide some games of similar taste but with a little more adult feel to them. sony might have the advantage in this department though since motion control is already a part of their system.

now watch Nintendo kill this who situation by releasing a new console in 2 years that is a mix of the 3. i know i might pick up that console on day 1.

150 million sounds a tad optimistic to me. People aren't likely going to own several game consoles and the PS3 isn't the best Blu-ray player choice for a majority of the consumers getting ready to buy a Blu-ray player this year and next is how I see it. The PS3 will continue to sell well and if further price reductions are possible, it might sell really well. I just don't see this console priced at $200 ever.

Its possible...just not probable. Its more probable that the Wii is the ps1 or ps2 for this generation. Wii has all of the momentum and its cheap now. It will take another year or two for PS3 to reach the $199 price point. With the slow economy, high energy costs, etc a $400 console is not a mainstream price for the adverage consumer... Plus competition is better this time around when compared to PS1 and PS2 days

sony's money vs microsoft's money is no competition.

could that be the same reason why sony cleaned house vs nintendo and sega in the last 2 console generations?

has Microsoft every lost to any company in anything it has invested in?

things to ponder?

Good luck Sony... I don't think it will happen. (unless they change to a 15 year lifecycle roffle)

Actually, it has lots tons of times:

Versus Apple/Realtime during the Container/Streaming Wars (*.asf versus *.mov/*.rt)
Versus Apple with the mobile media player (iPod pwning Zune)
Versus Macromedia in developing the Internet "web" protocol
Versus the (forgot their name, Apple was involved) in the VC-1 vs AVC world standard
Versus Apple in the digital music format and that guy who's name I forgot (MP3/AAC)

Ummmm....oh

Versus Nintendo in the console wars :)

Anyways, on topic I personally doubt Sony will outsell the PS2. Not with the Wii cleaning house. Unless they start giving away PS3s with every TV/PSP/Sony brand batteries, I really can't swallow this PR spin.
