In a bit of bright news, the Tokyo-based manufacturer marked a continued recovery in its long struggling video game section, which was profitable in the latest quarter in contrast to losses the previous year.

Sony sold 1.56 million PlayStation 3 machines in April-June, more than double the 700,000 machines sold the same period a year ago. It kept unchanged its forecast for selling 10 million PS3 consoles the fiscal year through March 2009.

I read this a little differently, I'm reading that the Playstation piece of business is once again profitable. I would presume this is a result of all pieces of the Playstation brand (royalties, licensing, games, etc.). Not just the Playstation 3 itself. :2cents

True. Sony games division (composing of PS2, PSP, PS3, their respective games, etc) turned profitable, not PS3 itself. Sony mentioned that PS3 is expected to be profitable next year.

Yeah I think you guys are right. Blu Ray players are still more expensive than the PS3, which gets price cuts left and right. It will be a long while before the console makes any kind of profit

Sony’s portable console saw software sales dip to 11.8 million sales, from 14.8 in Q4 at the end of the last FY. PSP hardware sales fared better though, with a rise from 3.42 to 3.72 million units.

By Q4 do they mean the Holiday shopping season?

Q4=Oct-Dec

Well, normally, but fiscally, sometimes it doesn't. And since in the original article, their fiscal year ends in March, that would signify to me that Q4 might be Jan-March. :what: Dunno for sure though.

This is just the first in a long string of quarters of profitability for the Sony game division. I do not expect any profits on the sale of PS3 consoles, but with about 15 million in consumer's hands now, the related sales and games licensing will be profitable. This is a long way from recovering the billions that have been invested to get Sony where it is now, but it is a start.
