Samsung owners check your DLP. 5085W

I bought a Sammy DLP 5085W in Feb 05. After it was delivered I noticed the sticker at the bottom said it had the 3rd generation light engine? I thought this has to be a mistake so I called Samsung. They said the sticker must have been an error. I went to all the stores in the area selling them and noticed their sticker said 4th generation light engine. I called a Samsung tech to come out and replace the screen and I asked him what version this TV was and he said 3rd Generation. I called Samsung tech and gave them my serial number and they also confirmed it was a 3rd NOT a 4th generation DLP.

To make a long story short, I went back to the Store that sold it to me. They were extremely helpful and finally got in touch with someone a Samsung that knew exactly what happened. Apparently Samsung produced many 5085W TVs with the older 3rd generation light engine and DID NOT change the model number when they updated their production to use the 4th generation light engine. So there are many consumers that could have bought what they thought was a 4th generation DLP that was actual a 3rd. The model number DID not change. I was livid.

However, the Samsung rep apologized for the error and shipped me a brand new HLR-5087W 2005 Model. It will arrive next week or so for the same cost. I am now a very happy camper. Just wanted to let everyone know whats out there. The best way to check your light engine is to phone in your serial number to tech support.

I hope this helps. I'd be very wary of buying a really discounted DLP 5085W unless I knew when it was manufactured and had the serial number checked.

On a different note, the HD picture on this old DLP is amazing to me. Can't wait to see if I notice a difference with the 05 model.

where exactly was the sticker?

The sticker that states the Generation of the light engine and the contrast ratio is located on the bottom left of the pedistal. It is a big blue sticker. The difference is the 3rd generation light engine and a 1500 to 1 contrast ratio.

The newer 5085W should have the 4th generation light engine and a 2500 to 1 contrast ratio.

If you call Samsung and give them your serial number they will be able to tell you what generation the light engine is . Also there is a function on a Samsung Tech's universal remote that will display Ver 3 or Ver 4.
