Voom Winners/DTV Losers

Voom's content is saved! It'll now be available on DISH Network. 21 Channels of true HD. And we're talking about 1080 here, folks... not that crappy, watered down up-converted 720 stuff.

DTV users will not be affected by this.

Which isn't surprising, since DTV has done a great job in making sure that their customers aren't affected by much of anything that has to do with true HD. No Monsters HD, no Kung Fu HD, no Gallery HD, no Equator HD, no RUSH HD, no Rave HD, etc, etc, etc...

Jeepers guys... just when it looked like DTV was gonna be the best game in town... DISH pulls one outta their hat FOR THE WIN!

WOOT!!

Sorry for you guys who are losing out.

TRUE HD FOR THE WIN!

When will this take place?

Echostar's press release says the channels go live on May 1, 2005 for DISH HD Suscribers.

Dish deserves kudos for this acquisition, no doubt about it. In the short term, however, Dish & D* appear to be involved in a game of leap frog. No real comparison of their HD offerings can be made until later in the year when the new sats are in place for D*.

For me the deciding factor between the two has always been the "NFL Sunday Ticket" programming that's exclusive to D*. Last season 5 or 6 of the games were broadcast each week in HD and this year, with the additional capacity, I would expect even more games will be.

If the choice for me is watching, in HD, my favorite NFL team play or watching the HD Kung Fu channel and the like then the decision is not even close! In real estate it's location, location, location. In television it's programming, programming, programming!!!

You could not have said it any better

I too will stick it out with D* and see what happens.

Berus,

Yes I agree Dish jumped on the Voom situation and that is great. A couple problems are that a lot of the HD channels that Voom carried were crap and also DTV already launched one satellite and the other one goes up in June. Dish is on top for now, but not for long when DTV takes over the HD world.

I have been really disappointed with the DTV offerings for HD especially not having TNT or ESPN 2 HD. As long as they deliver on the additional HD channels and the free mpeg-4 updated equipment I will be happy in the future.

For the most part , that Voom content youre talking about was crap. I had Voom for a lone month and pretty much the only thing that interested me was Worldsport and Lab, thats pretty sad. Hopefully when dish gets their hands on these channels they can put some real movies into these channels. Whats the point in having HD if the content is garbage?

DirectTV has the YES channel , also home games in HD for the moment, so Im pretty much happy where I am considering that frugal Dish is was too cheap to ever get any kind of deal with them.

i had voom for exactly one month before i ended its services, i first thought before buying voom that wow all these hd channels, but then realized, it had the worst programming and wasnt even worth watching(this is pretty much the main reason they went out of business, is because of this, thier channels sucked) the channels that dishnetwork is getting are pretty worthless, directv isnt missing much and i find it a good thing for them not add those lously voom channels

You're making me laugh hard, Italiano! Those channels are FANTASTIC!

You're taste in films must be fairly uncultivated. I've seen Kubric, Bergman, Lynch, Scorcese, Kurosawa, Fellini, Lean, Woo, and other great directors' works on a regular basis on VOOM!'s channels. Let's also not forget WorldSport, Rave, GuyTV, Equator, Gallery, and RUSH. No one pay any attention to what Italiano and the Armchair quarterback above are saying. The HD originals from VOOM! are nothing but sweet! Italiano was probably just disappointed that they didn't offer Dukes of Hazard in HD. Their programming is and has been nothing short of STUNNING since day 1. But, since you probably think Fellini is a brand of pasta, there may not be much hope for you, paisan.

OK, Kubrick's fine. I thought "Gangs of New York" sucked. No desire to see "Aviator" either, the 30 second spot at the Oscars was plenty. Different strokes for different folks. If Fellini got run over by a Lamborgini (whoops, he's already dead) I could care less.

Armchair QB and me are in the majority that use HDTV primarily for sports- I wouldn't have bothered otherwise. BTW, I'm not a beer swillin' redneck either. Like to have some vintage Bordeaux or Port with my NFL, if you question my level of sophitication. IMHO, he's right as rain that the market for Voom's HD channels was, shall we say extremely limited. :)

You've got to be kidding. Even without the Voom 21 originals there was about 15 or 16 OTHER HD channels. So if you think HBO, Showtime, Cinemax, Encore, Starz, TMC, TNT etc.. are crap then I can understand. But I highly doubt you actually had Voom because there was an almost equal amount of non-Voom HD. Plus every movie channel included the west coast HD feed. So even without the Voom originals there were about 4 times as many HD channels on Voom. Im sorry but you are a moron.

And how bout "They call him Flipper-Flipper-faster than lighting,no one but he------------gotta get to the bathroom NOW

"They call him Flipper, Flipper, faster than lightning,
No-one you see, is smarter than he,
And we know Flipper, lives in a world full of wonder,
Flying there-under, under the sea!

Everyone loves the king of the sea,
Ever so kind and gentle is he,
Tricks he will do when children appear,
And how they laugh when he's near!

They call him Flipper, Flipper, faster than lightning,
No-one you see, is smarter than he,
And we know Flipper, lives in a world full of wonder,

no-one you see, is smarter than he,
and we know Flipper, lives in a world full of wonder,
flying there-under, under the sea!

Look at the sky when rainbows appear,
you can be sure, that Flipper is near,
call him by name or less intellect,
he'll give you a ride on his back!

We know our Flipper, Flipper, knows every answer,
no-one can be, much smarter than he,
and we know Flipper, lives in a world full of wonder,
flying there-under, under the sea!

Many a night, way down in the deep,
oysters make beds, so Flipper can sleep,
happy and gay when he comes along,
they all start singing this song!

They call him Flipper, Flipper, faster than lightning,
no-one you see, is smarter than he,

There once was a boy, that lived by the sea,
ever so kind, but lonely was he,
until one day, one day when he met,
a friend he'll never forget!

His name is Flipper, Flipper, faster than lightning,
no-one you see, is smarter than he,
and we know Flipper, lives in a world full of wonder,
flying there-under, under the sea!"

And a few episodes started with, what I called, 'Lounge Lizard Flipper'. It was verse 2 in a cocktail lounge-type music.....

I loved Flipper, and how about Thunderbirds Saturdays!

Hopefully that channel will be on again soon on Dish.

With T-birds, you could see the wires in widescreen HD!
