Is it possible to get decent HD reception through a large group of trees between the antenna and the transmitting station 30 miles away? And I mean a really large group of trees.

If your are talking about OTA,like it was said "you don't know till you try".I have a Channel Master 4228 antenna mounted 11 feet off the ground, aimed right at a group of trees, and more of a problem is that 200 feet away are 3 story town houses,I pull all of my locals with out a problem. When the antenna was mounted on the roof I had more of a problem with the leaves than I do now because I am shooting below the branches rather that right at them.Give it a shot and after trying many antennas I can say without any doubts that the CM 4228 is one of the better antennas. You should be able to find one for around 50.00
