Directv's Video On Demand Suck's

Originally I was excited about connecting my internet to Video On Demand. But it take's a while to download show's-even though my internet service is the fastest.
Also,VOD is just begining with DTV-it's called their BETA version. So for now I've disconnected the ethernet cable and will just record show's on my HD DVR where I can basically do the same thing's I can do on VOD,except with a faster result !
Also on the VOD listing's guide there are dollar signs on some show's that you can be charged for if you choose that particular show. These show's are old movie's that you can watch on regular tv-yet DTV is CHARGING people for them !I don't get it.Anyway VOD is a total turn off. I LOVE my HD DVR and I LOVE recording my tv show's while I'm at work and I LOVE watching some of those recorded show's in high definition.I am so happy !

Helpful hint: Just because a word ends with an 's' doesn't mean it needs an apostrophe.

Hint #2: VoD is still in Beta. It will improve.

The DOD download times really get lengthy when you select HD programs. One way to deal with the delay is to queue all your DOD programs before you go to bed, then when you wake up, they will be ready.

Another helpful hint for rickbbb - Just because you don't care for DIRECTV VOD type service right now doesn't mean it sucks.

You said - my internet service is the fastest.
WOW !! You must have the COMCAST 50Mbps service. How do you like it ? What does it cost you per month ? It's about $149.95/month in my area.

Can you give some examples of old movie's that you can watch on regular tv-yet DTV is CHARGING people for them ! I thought they only charged for the PPV DOD movies.

I am wondering does the On Demand charge you to download a movie on a channel you do not subscribe to? I had Premier until yesterday so I never noticed it, but that could be what he is seeing.

Its 54.95 here in Cali.

I think rickbbb was happier with E*!. I have not seen any $ content that was old. New VOD releases and premium content may be $, just like cable.

Yes it's beta.... because it's still beta!!! You can start programs to watch as long as you use a broadband connection. You don't HAVE to wait - unless your connection (ISP, YOUR fault - not D*) is slowed for some reason. I have watched many programs while they still streamed in.

I was just looking through the ON Demand and found that there is a movie channel on 1100 that has 24 hour rentals of older movies. I found the classic Awakenings on there starring Robin Williams and DeNiro for $1.99.

It took me awhile to find it though with all the other stuff they have in the BETA version of D* On Demand.

I agree with Goober that Rickbb will never be fully happy with his D* service.

I agree there is very little VOD has that is compelling. I'm on fiber at 15mbs so download (44.95 a month) is not an issue. There is just nothing I want to download and believe me I was very excited when this started. I notice NBC is available now but all they have is season 2 esposide of 30 Rock for 99 cent. :huh

I have found quite a bit to get off On Demand especially for it being Beta. I am just amazed that people expect it to be the very best right out of the box.

I don't use it much either and if you select movies about half of them have dollar signs. But it is free so no complaints.

Some people gripe, moan and complain because they have nothing better to do. rickbbb, you are constantly complaining about D*. If you don't like it, get rid of it. Then maybe you won't feel compelled to come out here and bore us with your constant whining.

Actually 3 mbps is the fastest speed Verizon has in Los Angeles county and my area was the first to get it in our suburb.
And in regard's to some of you who posted how I'm alway's complaining about this or that.Well, look at YOUR past post's and you'll see that YOU complained just as much or More than me and that you constantly attacked other's on this website.I'm not saying you're "hypocrts"..but....anyway,can't we all just get along?

Then your internet service is not the fastest, as you claimed in your original post. You have DSL which is not as fast as cable or FiOS.

Actually Verizon offers a faster speed with there FiOS service my speed is 15 mbs/2 mbs. My housing tract had fiber laid in the ground to every house they just had to bring it inside. I'm not complain about the VOD service it's the content or the lack of that is disappointing to me. My BIL is on Charter and there On Demand is fantastic he gets all the pay service and tons of programming in HD. Look I had DTV for years, HD DVR since they first offered them. I've got 3 HD DVR all hook up on the net so I do want the service but it's not ready yet hell DTV even calls it Beta.

This is a very old topic. We went though this subject months ago. Until they start having tv shows from the major networks, it is a joke.

They've just thrown us a bone by putting some of the NBC shows up like The Office and 30 Rock....as long as you're willing to pay $2 and have it deleted in 24 hours. What a bargain!!!!

I'm no longer a DirecTV customer, but wanted to chime in here. First, I think it's horrible that DirecTV is charging for broadcast shows on VOD. Second, all companies have different pricing structures with their on demand services (some companies charge you extra if you want to use a premium channel's on-demand, e.g. - meaning you'll pay a flat rate to get the premium channel, but if you want access to that channel's on-demand library it'll cost you a couple bucks extra every month).

Third, as for the complaint about paying for old movies - DirecTV isn't the only ones to do that. They all do. I have FiOS and they do that too. They talk about renting 'new releases... or familiar favorites.' BTW, this isn't new for DirecTV - when I was a customer they were charging for older movies on PPV as well.

What makes it more confusing is that the same movie that you would be paying for may be watched for free on another channel. For example I have the Movie Pack with FiOS (Starz, Showtime, TMC, Flix, Encore, IFC and Sundance). With that I get the VOD service for those channels included in my service. Sometimes a movie that I can get for free - an older movie - on Starz will also be available for renting on the FiOS VOD menu. It catches alot of people off-guard - heck, sometimes the difference can be pretty stark.

For example, HD Net Movies has been running new theatrical releases before they actually hit the theaters. I have my DVR set up to record the next one - Finding Amanda - airing next week. It's in HD, and uninterrupted/unedited... and free. But I could rent the same movie for $10 (in SD - or $11 in HD) to watch in via VOD - VOD services have taken to airing new theatrical releases before they actually hit the big screen too.

Overally VOD is a great service. It's going to continue to improve (I never thought I would care for it, when I was a DirecTV customer - this was before DOD came along... but I was wrong). I'm sure DirecTV's service will continue to improve too. The offerings will expand over time.

Finally, there's one last thing to consider - there are VOD-only channels out there. It makes sense - you can start up a channel for very little money, offering stuff directly to people's homes. Verizon currently offers a few of them, and I fully expect you'll see alot more popping up over time.

I was considering throwing a little going-away party for him in the dish section when he finally announced he was getting rid of dish...it made me just that happy to see him go:yippee:

We had him way longer than we should have, now its your turn. Just a word of advise; bring lots of cheese to go with his whine, cause youre gonna need it :haha:
