The new Silent Hill game isn't completely abandoned by the original Japanese devs: long-time composer for the series, Akira Yamaoka, is still on board and singing praises to the new staff and the new game. Yamaoka sat down with Gamasutra at a recent Konami event and spoke a bit about the game. Let's listen in.

Yamaoka thinks it's a natural step for the game to move on to Western developers -- it had originally been a game whose horror is derived from American cinema. Plus the franchise is more popular in the US, he says. Yamaoka is also trying to move away from the horror genre, saying he "worked on some other titles that are not horror titles. But also I have something, another project in mind, that I'm trying to develop." If you're looking for what influences the Silent Hill team, he says it's probably David Lynch (The Elephant Man, specifically). So there you go. At least we can expect his white-noise style of music to scare us silly in Silent Hill: Homecoming, right?

Sorry, I can't think of any movies that even closely remind of the mind-F*$k that is a Silent Hill game.

Your thoughts??

Hmmm interesting. This is something I could ponder and research for hours if I wanted to (but I don't ;) ).

Silent Hill 4 was definitely inspired by the Polanski's films Repulsion and The Tenant at it's core. There is some imagery that is straight out of Session 9, too.

I never played Silent Hill 3, but I played the demo and the imagery was straight out of Funhouse, an 80's slasher.

Silent Hill 2..... hmmmm. I can think of a few Japanese movies that might've inspired it but no western.

Never played SH1.

That's exactly what I was thinking. But honestly, even with three and four, the imagery was like NOTHING I've ever seen from a western based production company. Ever. Story ideas, maybe. But not the imagery. Hell, Clive Barker doesn't even come close to Silent Hill IMO.

Ok. I'm going to take the chance that you are simply being sarcastic. You have avoided being virtually bitch-slapped.

*slap* WHAT? HUH? HOW? WHY???????

Tis well worth the play despite the now primative visuals Glow  I'd highly recommend hunting a cheapie PS1 copy down to play on your PS3. The game still oozes bucketloads of atmosphere.

As for Silent Hill being inspired by western horrors, maybe the John Carpenter stuff such as The Thing and The Fog is what they're referring to? As I can see resemblence to 70s and 80s horror films, it certainly isn't based on recent hollywood horror efforts though.

Ok, this one I can see. And maybe Jacob's Ladder.

Im just gonna throw this out there, but Im thinking by "western" developers he implying the west as in North America, not western like John Wayne and Ronnie Reagan, thus taking it from the direction of the atypical japanese horror genre to maybe a more americanized style horror genre.
