Any Toshiba Regza fans here? Buying a 42"

I am in the midst of a major Home Theatre overhaul. After weeks of research and dealing I am taking delivery (in a few days) of a locally-bought Samsung 58" Plasma (updating my old Toshiba 55" rear projection) and an Onkyo 875 tuner-amp (updating my old Onk 909 Integra) The receiver is being shipped from CA where I found an awesome price.

The last piece of the puzzle is a new TV to act as my upstairs set and replacement for my ancient Sony DXR (a 20+ year old follow up to the early XBR and Sony's first digital) It was a great old set but it died a sudden death a couple weeks ago (natural causes)

Now the TV I have settled on as my "daily driver" is the Toshiba Regza 42 XV540U (crazy model numbers on these new sets!)

I was going to get the new Sony Bravia but I am in a position to get the Toshiba on trade in my line of work (radio) I like the wider bezel of the XV54U better than the slim bezel models.

Now the old 55" Toshiba 4x3 rear projector was a fabulous set... 1000's of hours of DVDs, sat, cable and 1000's more PS1, 2 & 3 and Xbox... at 12 years old it still works like a charm. It's longevity is a reason I like the Toshiba name. I've been told they really started to slip a few years back and were not up to snuff of the other name brands.

Is the Regza a good set? I will be using it simply as my stand alone set for cable and High-Def satellite. I chose to go with the LCD as the room has more natural light than my dark basement theatre room where the Samsung plasma is going.

I see very few Toshiba posts and was wondering if anyone has anything to say about this set and Regza TVs in general.

They used to have a pricey Cinema Series but someone told me this new Regza with it's 120hz chassis was as good as anything they've made.

If you read through posts on here, you will find that a lot of people realy like the Regza's and some quote them as the best LCD. I almost bought a Regza until I came across a deal on a Panny that I couldn't pass up. Had a friend get the 46" from Costco, they just got it, can't wait to see it. If I didn't get the Viera, it would have been the Regza.

Yes, I've sifted thru hundreds of replies and seems to be lots of praise for the Regza.

I appreciate your reply.

i just bought my regza a little over a week ago. the lack of posts about them is one of the reasons why i did. i did searches on toshiba, sony, samsung and sharp, and looked at the types of threads there were. toshiba had very few post about people having problems with them.

i'll be getting a toshiba regza 42RV530, a 1080p 42".it sells in the U.S. for about 1200 but in canada its 1500, still cheaper then the samsung, sharp and sony 1080p's in the 40inch range. my reasons for getting a toshiba regza was the price, it has 4hdmi inputs, i like th style ofthe tv and reviews have been really really good with it, if i werent getting a toshiba i would opt to get a samsung since i heard and read more negative stuff about the sharps lately.. even one of my local stores (whacky wheatly) no longer carries sharp tv's cause they had to many consumers brining them back with problems. i remember when sharps aquos where considered to be amazing.. .. and i wont get a plasma no matter the cost, i just prefer LCD

I have the 42HL67 and I love that TV. The picture quality is very good for a 720p LCD. It now hangs in my bedroom since i just bought a new plasma :)

My 1080p Regza rocks and look as good as the day it was new and I bought it when they first became available...I believe it to be the hands down best LCD available and I did a tremendous amount research before purchasing it.

Does anyone know what the difference is between the 60hz model of the Regza and the 120hz model? Other than $400?

Thanks (I'm new to posting but have been reading your wise posts for a while and I'm about to purchase a Regza myself, excited!!!)

Off the top of my head, I believe the 42XV540U has x.v. color & a 10 bit panel (vs. 8 bit panel on 42RV530U) in addition to the 120Hz processing.

You are right about that, but what's the difference between 120Hz and 60? Is it noticable? Is it worth the $$$?

Yes and know. Some people don't like the Motion Processing with the 120 HZ TV's. I myself like it. It makes the picture have a diffrent look and feel. Its kind of hard to explain. You should go to Best buy or some store and take a look and see if you like it. The 120 HZ is supposed to also help with the blur of LCD.

"Blur of LCD"? I thought LCD was better for sports than Plasma, therefore there was less blur. Am I getting things crossed? My main viewing will be football, baseball and movies.

Thanks again!

Plasma's are very good for sports. LCD are known for thier blur. They are getting better, but its still there. I own both a PLasma and a LCD and I think the Plasma has a better picture all around. I was always against plasma, but I am glad I bought one. You should go look at the difference between the two. If you are watching sports then a Plasma could be better, but everyone has different opinions on thier TV's.

Cnet has a Plasma for the best HD TV. Not sure the model number. So you should check them out. You make the like picture of the Plasma better. Good luck.

Thanks for your help. I'm still researching and I've thought of another question...

If I get a Plasma that is still 60Hz, what's the difference? I think 120Hz sets are always going to be out of my price range and Best Buy doesn't offer the 42inch Toshiba w/ 120Hz, so I'm not sure what to do.

I don't want to go over $1200, but I guess I could stretch $1400 (the wife doesn't even like the sound of $1200) so what are my options now? Ugh, this is too scientific! But I kinda like the misery of finding the best value/best quality...

If I were you, I would go to Best Buy or Circuit City and spend some time looking at the different models they have there. I have 2 Toshiba LCD's and couldn't possibly be happier. For the money you simply can't go wrong. I got my 42RV530U for $1049 at Circuit City and anyone would be hard pressed to find a better LCD with those specs at that price point. I watch hockey, basketball and baseball on my 42" LCD and I notice minimal, if any, blurring. In fact, I am watching the Yankees get spanked by Toronto right now and I'm not seeing any blurring.:D

I also game with my XBOX 360 and the picture is fantastic.

I just bought my 42 Plasma from BB and it was 897. Its the 450 series. They have the 50 inch for 1399 I believe. I love mine. You can always check out Best buy and the area for OPen Item Tv's for a lower price. I have seen some 40-42 inch Sammy and Sony for around $1200 open item. Again some people don't like the motion processing in the new tvs because of the "soap opera" effect. That can be turned off. If you are on a budget and want to save some cash the 450 series plasma could be an option.

Toshiba is one of my fav brands. I have the 42hl67 its not the 120 hz but I loved its picture. It is a really good picture, but the new plasma that I bought has a better picture overall. I would go check out the TV's and see what you think.

I think Toshibas are mostly Underrated IMO. I hate baseball but when I flip through the channels and I see baseball in HD I always watch the channel for a min lol. Sports in HD =Awesome. Football needs to get here!!

How did you get your 42RV530U for $1050?? The lowest I've seen anywhere is $1200. It's the only LCD that I've been considering but it's just out of my price range. I do start working at Circuit City on Saturday so I could ask one of my fellow employees what kind of discount we get. Man, looks like you got a great deal and hope you're happy with it!!

I bought it on 4-19-08 when CC was offering a limited time special, $150 off select TV's.

I would have gladly spent the full $1199 on it since it is completely worth it. But you can get it for $1079 right now if you have a Best Buy 10% coupon, bring that coupon to CC and they will price match for you. That's what I was going to originally do until I checked the CC website and they had that $150 off promotion valid for a few days.

And yes, I am enjoying the TV alot!:D

Thanks for the tip! I'm going to wait another month before I pull the trigger so I've got time to think this through.
