HR21 lack of OTA feature

My parents' story upgrading to HD...

They upgraded and were sent a refurbished HR20. We installed the HR20, but it wasn't working properly. My parents had to pay to have a technician to come out to fix it. It was only fixed briefly, and a second technician came out and confirmed our belief that the HR20 was defective. DirecTV then sent them an HR21.

The problem is the HR21 does not have an antenna input, which is needed by my parents. Most of the TV they watch is OTA, and they would like the ability to record broadcast channels on the DVR. I know the AM21 is available for $60. However, why should my parents have to spend more money because their original HR20 didn't work?

I'm wondering if anyone else has had this issue, if they contacted DirecTV, and if they offered to send the AM21 OTA tuner for free. I don't think that's too much to ask, considering everything would have been fine if DirecTV had given my parents an HR20 that actually worked to begin with. Thanks in advance!

Why not just ask Directv?

That's the plan. For now, I'm just wondering if anyone else has had the issue, and if DirecTV obliged.

I've read posts on other boards where Directv did not charge for the AM21 under special circumstances. I would think having an HR20 taken away and replaced with an HR21 would justify a free AM21.

If D* sent me a refurbished unit, I would have sent it back. :error

Half of the new ones don't work out of the box, so one can only imagine the % of bad refurb units. :bs:

Here's an update after my dad called DirecTV. They offered to sell him an AM21 for $50. They told him he could just use his TV to watch OTA channels. I told him he should call back and tell them that's great, but it would be nice to record OTA on to the DVR he's paying for.

The answer in my case at least is yes. But- I live in a mid market that doesn't get HD locals OTA yet. After playing when are HD locals gonna get on the satellite game, they finally set me up with a conflict resolution person that credited the price of the AM-21 that I had ordered the previous day.

You may want to use this as added ammunition when you talk to D*, of course mention the defective H20, but it's also my understanding that D* is tossing in a free AM 21 for the asking for new sign ups. If they're going to give it away to new customers, current subscribers deserve the same price break in my book.

Edit: Ditto. Call back, and tell them that's not good enough. It's not just watching HD OTA, it's being able to record it too. And if they still won't budge, ask to talk to conflict resolution.

If you don't accept a refurb unit, you would not be watching D*!! Its all they send out. I know, I've rec'd 4-5 of them. There are no new ones to be had.

i just went through this whole process and it leaves me so agry..my h20 puked so they told me they were sending me the same reciever, i get a h21 i cant get my HD locals, i was told the same thing use your TV. well what if i dont want the hassle of switching from tv to SAT. That is plain stupid. Plus i have everything run through my surround sound. I hope there engineers get hung on the highest tree for thinking of something so stupid. All they want to do it charge people for something that is free..People get free local HD so they have to steal it from people with hr21's and charge them 50 dollars..what a rip off...thats horrible

Hey folks, I'd switch to DISH. The 622 or 722 has all you desire. You know what they say about beating Eight Belles.

I have Dish, and I've had some customer service (or lack thereof) issues with them. So, I've kind of discouraged them from switching. I have found the Dish equipment much better, but my parents have been with DirecTV from almost the beginning. That's another reason I would hope DirecTV eventually offers to send them the AM21.

I'll take Directv's programming and channels over Dish's supposedly better equipment. Besides my H20s were not refurbished, but bought from Circuit City.

I seriously doubt that 50% of the brand new ones are bad out of the box ? Do you have any information to prove this ?
