I have DirecTV and am shopping for a DVD/VHS combo to replace the OLD VHS. I don't have a digital TV...yet. If I get a tunerless combo unit, will I be able to record shows to VHS from the satellite box? If I don't plan on getting anything OTA, just using satellite, will a tunerless unit be enough? What will I need to do differently when a. Feb 2009 comes and I still have my old analog tv and b. I get my digital TV after Feb 2009?

As long as you are watching your programming via Directv 2009 means nothing to you. It will apply only to OTA. DVD recording works great.

You don't need a tuner to record from Sat to DVD or VHS. Just input your SAT receiver directly into your combo, tell both devices when to come on/record and remember to use the correct input on your combo for timer recording.

You might want to get a combo that records to DVD as well.
