Rca F38310

I'm a newbie. I have searched for related info, but figure this is a good place to post this question - if not, I'm sure some one will advise... :bowdown:

The F38310 has built-in DirecTV receiver (coax connection from dish) and one component input for the DVD. I understand the DVD input is often "dumbed down" to 480p only. Does anyone know for sure if that is the case with this set, or is it possible that I can hook up an external HD receiver to this input? If it is 480p only, I guess I'm sunk when D* goes to MPEG-4, unless they dive into my set and replace the tuner.

Thanks for any good advice! :D

Well, I just got through to RCA. The support guy said the component input is rated at 650p - 750p. I'm familiar with 720p but maybe that's engineer-speak. He also said to open a service call with authorised repair shop and they will replace the 'paddle' (I assume the D* receiver?) at no charge if I take it in. I believe I'll spring for an onsite visit - that's one heavy TV. Hope this helps someone else with this set.

Thank you for your post. I am currently having the same difficulty with connecting the HD receiver DCT6200 from Comcast to my RCA F38310. It is ugly... So I am going to call the RCA service folks and get this fixed.

Thanks again!

Please let me know how you work it out. Are you using the coax cable input or the component input? I've wondered if the tuner can do HD cable using the coax cable input (I think it's antenna B...?). Anyway, good luck!

I tried to connect the HD receiver to antenna B via coax and it didn't work.

I am calling out a Comcast guy tomorrow. Also, I might get the RCA auth. service center to come out and do diags.

Did you get yours to work? If so, how?

The RF over Coax signal coming out of the cable STB is only 480i NTSC. No HDTV is possible on this connection, just downconverts.

If the component input can handle 720p, it should also be able to handle 1080i which is a lower frequency.

Thanks, Rsawdey. RCA told me (per above note) that the component inputs *should* do 720p, but I know just enough about it to blow stuff up. Do you think it would be safe to hook it up and see? Mat311 - does your STB have component outputs? If so, you might try hooking up to the RCA that way. I don't have cable, just D* and OTA. I have been interested to see if anyone has gotten a good HD signal through the components in case D*/RCA decide not to upgrade our receivers when MPEG-4 happens. In that case, I would try a 3rd party HD receiver. I have just been waiting until the other shoe drops before I test it out.

Yes, the first thing I did was connect the five component outputs on the Motorola DCT 6200 STB (and it is an HD receiver, too) to my RCA F38310 component video inputs, just as the directions said to do. When this didn't work, I started surfing the web for answers and ran into you nice people ;-).

I did find an interesting FAQ @

The FAQ says the following about supported scan rates:

Native Scan Rates:
- 480p (on component input only)
- 540p (upconverted NTSC)
- 1080i (upconverted 480p and 720p ATSC + 1080i ATSC)

Screen Resolution:
1280H x 1080V

Video Inputs:
(1) Rear DirecTV Satellite Dish;
(2) Rear NTSC/ATSC RF (Antenna A and B);
(1) Front (composite video; R/L Stereo Audio);
(3) Rear Audio/Video (composite video or S-video; R/L stereo audio); (1) Rear Component (YPrPb; 480i, 480p, 1080i; R/L stereo audio). Rumor has it that 540p will also work over the component input.

The cable guy comes tomorrow...WML (wish me luck)

The FAQ says your component inputs will only accept 480i, 480p, and 1080i. No 720p.
Setup your STB for 16:9 TV Shape, 1080i for YPrPb, 480p for override.

Excellent FAQ. Thanks! And good luck. Let us know how it goes.

It is fixed and I am now an HD fan - yea!

The problem was the coax cable, which was coming from the wall into the STB. It was RG59/U, which is not good for HD, and it needed to be RG6 coax. So the the RCA F38310 really *is* an HDTV ;-), and the component video inputs *do* support HD receiver STBs. All my questions have been answered.

All is tested and we are watching baseball games, etc...It is like being there!

Thanks for all your support.
