XM Radio

One of the things I enjoy most about D* is the XM radio. I read for hours at nite and listen to jazz, classical music and ol blue eyes. The quality seems to be better than OTA FM and, of course, no commercials.. Does anyone know how the quality of D* XM compares with OTA HD FM before I buy a HD FM tuner? Thanks!

Though I've never listened to fm hd the one advantage is that if you are going on a trip away from town you will lose the fm signal after some distance but not with xm. The disadvantage is, if your line of site is blocked so is the signal on xm. I'm sure xm has more available channels than hd.
Of course if the unit is in your house, you would have to run the wired antenna to a southern exposer to get a signal.
hope this helped!

The sales people at CC say FM HD is much better, but of course they are selling the tuners. Thanks all.

depends on the receiver you buy and how it's hooked up. Some of the newer ones are in 5.1 on some of the channels, although most are just stereo. I have 3 XM units and love them. Had them since Oct of 04 and haven't listened to one second of local radio since. I do listen to KROQ and KROQ hd2 out of LA over the internet just because that's what I listened to in High School and it's nostalgic. There are XM units as low as $20 and as high as $400. They all get the same channels, and if hooked up properly all sound just as good. I have one in a company vehicle that i listen to through an FM modulator. Sounds a little better standard FM. I have on hard wired and built into my personal car. CD quality sounds on all the music channels. You can try www.myradiostore.com and get a great deal.

had XM for years, they use super heavy compression so don't get excited it does sound crappy, they advertise digital quality but not cd!!!
However, looks like you are trying to compare XM over D* with HD radio. If so, HD radio will def sound as good as CD or close to it.

TV is for Watching

I use it to listen to the shows as well.

I like the XM Stations because sometimes at night I just turn on one of the stations and listen to it for awhile instead of my radio or iPod. I use to have a Surround Sound system and would play the XM Stations thru th speakers while working around the house.

I believe the XM service on D* is nice bonus. It saves me $13 per month for XM and the purchase of an additional receiver.

some of us listen to just the audio track of movies so we can memorize every word of dialog without distraction. After doing that we then go downtown and sit at a bus stop reciting every word in the movie for others to hear, kind like a mantra!!!

That is our calling in life to spread the word of the script writers!
At first I thought the sat companies were taking advantage of our brains and using us. Now I simply accept what they tell me!

Your TV is, but your Direct receiver is for TV watching, music listening, video recording, and picture viewing.

Often we turn on our receiver, connected to our outside speaker, to "XM Top Tracks" and listen to XM classic rock while outside. Guess what? Our TV is never turned on, only our receiver and sound system is on.

Like during Christmas time, all those subliminal messages sent out through the XM Christmas channels we listen to while decorating our tree only helps us to become more festive and happy.

I think you're getting all worked up over nothing.

I don't listen to the XM channels via DIRECTV but I could care less if they carry them or not.
