Better to Buy or Lease?

Direct TV now only leases their HD Boxes...saying they cost 699.00, but you can buy new HR20/21s for around 200-300 dollars on EBAY or Amazon. you'll still have to pay a fee for HD, but not the leasing and upfront cost (99-199) for the box.

My question is: I have a 5lnb HD sat(house I moved into already had one), an HD 1080p TV, but currently NOT a HD Box(standard DVR box)...I want HD, what is the cheapest, best possible solution? I don't have the tv yet (in-transit) but I think I'll be able to get some HD channels through open air and the 5lnb sat...should I buy a box from amazon and then a card from DTV or lease the box?

You have to be careful buying the e-bay/amazon 3rd party boxes. There have been reports of people trying to sell HD boxes that were leased or had a bad credit history, which means Direct will not activate it. If you go the e-bay route, make sure to get the receiver id and serial # so that you can verify it with Directv before buying.

Personally, I like the leasing plan. Have bought many rcvrs over the past several years which eventually end up being outdated and become worthless clutter in a closet.

ALL current Direct boxes are leased, every one of them...They may quote you a retail price but they are not for sale. So a box for sale on eBay is stolen.

but I can buy a HR20 for 169 (hr21 for 189.00)new from Amazon...I doubt amazon sells stolen merchandise?

I'm hesitant with the 199(as one person quoted) or the 99 (as another), plus 4.99 for two years (service agreement) which would total $120 + $99(or 199) > $169? If I buy a box from Amazon do I sign up for another two years..

To be honest this is what I'm trying to avoid, a two year extension..don't like being in contracts, removes my leverage as a consumerist.

You are still leasing those. Just like if you were to pick it up at BestBuy you pay an upfront cost and then lease it.

Out of curiosity, if you buy one of those Amazon units then cancel your DirecTV subscription in 3 years, are you supposed to send the unit back somewhere?

Yes... DTV will send you a box to return the unit in.

hardly. Boxes on eBay are not stolen. The fact is, you can buy one off eBay, but you are still leasing it. If they say you own it, they are lying.

My question is what recourse do you have if the box is crap? I went through four HD DVRs until I got a good one. Each time I would go to Kinkos/FedEx to send one back, I'd be standing in line with five or six other people doing the same. When I asked him, the counter guy said they sent back about 20 a day on average.

Buying one from Ebay may be a very expensive move in the long run. Find out in writing if you can get the service plan ($5.99/month). It was well worth it for us, at least for the first 3 months.

A class action lawsuit (http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1976126/posts)was filed against DirecTV in February over this issue. Time will tell if we actually own the boxes or not.

In about 5 weeks it will be 3 years since DTV hooked up 2 SD, and 1 HD box. I have since replaced 2 of them in the past 7 to 8 months. The old receivers are still sitting in my garage. Does that mean that I own them? Probably not. However, I would assume that DTV doesn't want obsolete equipment returned to them. Does anybody think that I should sent DTV a storage fee for their equipment? (not)

Do you expect us to believe you go to Kinkos, and 6 people in line are also sending back Directv DVRs?

Let's stop the ridiculous posts.

New units on eBay are also eligible for the DTV service plan.

If that was true I would say stay away from that Kinko's.

Have 3 HR-20's in my house and my parents have 2. None of them have ever had a problem other then the short unresponsiveness the other day.

I went to Kinko's yesterday and there was a bin labeled "Direct TV" and there no less than 8 boxes in the bin. I obviously don't know if they were DVRs, but they were all heading back to the factory.

Oh... and this was only 9am.

Personally, I've not had any problems with my units.

Some of those could have been from people who cancelled their Directv service and were returning a working receiver.

They are all leased when purhcased through authorized channels. Why buy one even if you could? Lease means DIRECTV has to repair or replace in case of problems.

You should have checked for a promotion when you bought your TV. I paid a lease fee of 99 up front but Best Buy took 100 of the price of my TV for doing so. Check to see if whoever you bought your TV from has such a promotion.

Yeah, right. Give us the number to this Kinko's, and the address so we can verify you aren't giving us your cell number.

How rich.

If they do have a bin, it's like cell phone bins. It's for recycling and DirecTV has an agreement with them, much like Verizon does with places on recycled cell phones.

Man. Actually, I did. And they do not have a DTV per Sahara, a male employee. they have a Cox Cable bin, and all it's for is for return equipment for people who have cancelled service.

He said they do not accept DirecTV as far as he knew.

However, if he's wrong, at least we cleared it up and I'm correct. It's not faulty equipment either way. It's customers returning equipment that was leased.

Of course, anyone who would use their head would realize this. I called it without even thinking about it.

Or maybe I'm just smarter than you. Who knows.

2 things.

1. I called, that's who I spoke to, and thats what they said

2. You gave out the wrong number. You gave me the number to the other side of Kinkos, they transferred me.

So yeah, I did call. And anyone else here can to to prove ur full of it.

Very entertaining. I suspect Cox cable has other places besides their stores where you can drop off boxes, hence the Kinkos.

About the lease fee... If you only have one receiver you aren't billed a lease fee, am I right? Starting with the second one, the lease fee kicks in.

Anyway, I am perplexed at the number of people who bitch about the lease and lease fee (paying an amount up front and then a lease fee monthly) when the same people have leased a car or an apartment. These things also require money up front and some sort of monthly payment.
