If you are talking about programming on local digital TV stations; programs in HD are typically only broadcast during prime-time, or during specific events, etc. Otherwise programming will be in 4:3 with black bars on the side.

If you are talking Dish channels, specified as HD, not all material shown on Dish was recorded in HD. In these cases they may stretch the picture to fill the screen, or sometimes have bars with logos to fill in the side gaps.

LoriI am disappointed by the picture quality of DISH SD channels on my 57" HDTV. I sure like the HD channels & I get my local channels (NASCAR & MLB & football) over the air. I still have issues with my 622DVR, but I still like my decision to switch from Directv to DISH.

DISH, DTV, and the cable providers are simply transmitting the signal provided them. Much of what is available on the HD channels is simply SD programming that providers have expanded to fit the 16:9 aspect ratio. TNT, USA, SciFi, TBS, USA, CNN and the others have limited programming actually shot in HD. DISH's Voom package has the most original HD programming available 24 hours a day, but it can be pretty dull at times and there tend to be quite a few repeats. I do enjoy the Kung Fu, Rave, and Rush channels while my wife enjoys Ultra and Gallery a lot. To each his own.

My biggest disappointment to date has been SciFi, which for some reason broadcasts it's repeats of Enterprise, Stargate, and others - which WERE shot in HD - in what appears to be SD letterbox. When their current programming is on (BSG, etc) it is in glorious full HD and is awesome. I just wish they would broadcast these other shows that were shot in HD in HD. It can be rather confusing at times.

I agree, the BSG reruns on UNIHD were a pleasure to watch!

:hithere: what is the voom package?
I thought that we have all the channels that dish has to offer
I know we had to pay an additional 20 bucks for the package that we have.

Lori
never mind we have it

There are many variables that make up a great HD viewing experience. There are too many to take into account here.
Yours sounds like TV settings/enhancements and color calibration.
